Jun 2004 - Mar 2005

Staff Engineer

Helena, Mt, Us

While at MMI, I worked in both the Helena, MT and Phoenix, AZ offices. I worked on numerous projects, two of which are highlighted below. I served as the design engineer for the largest rural water system in the US, modeling over 150 scenarios using WaterCAD and KY Surge for the design of 360,000LF of pipe. The modeling led to recommendations to improve the core pipeline by reducing the number of pump stations and reservoirs. I also worked with the design team to prepare bid documents and estimates on several phases of the project, including over 20 miles of 24-inch steel waterline, a 9.5MGD pump station, and both buried and elevated reservoirs. I lead an investigation at a prison facility into the cause of water pipeline breaks throughout the prison, and overflow conditions persistent at the water treatment plant evaporation ponds. The investigation showed that the electrodialysis reversal (EDR) treatment plant was over-treating the water, creating a mineral starved and aggressive finished water that was attacking the pipelines. In addition, the over-treating was contributing more brine to the evaporation ponds. The project recommended several modifications to the treatment plant and repairs to the damaged components. After studying the evaporation ponds, a thick layer of salt was discovered in the top few inches of the ponds. This salt effectively blocked evaporation from occurring. To alleviate the situation, solar-powered mixers were added to the ponds to break up the salt layer.
