These partners include the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Massachusetts Audubon Society, Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife, Hofstra University, The Turtle Survival Alliance, The American Chestnut Foundation, and Oxbow Associates, Inc. Taunton River Diamondback Terrapin LeadTaunton River Watershed Alliance Inc Apr 2016 - PresentThis project is a multi-year population assessment of the North Diamondback Terrapins in the Lower Taunton River Watershed. This is the first detailed investigation of this population of state threatened turtles and we have tagged more than 200 terrapins to date and the work is now expanding to sympatric and parapatric turtle species. Our project is one of the few conducting "big river turtle trapping" in the region. We hope to better understand the relationship between the distribution of turtle species and salinity in our study area and how changing sea levels may change this is the future. (This is a seasonal volunteer position.) -
