The Office of Technology Licensing manages all aspects of intellectual property generated and owned by NC State. Our team manages portfolios of innovations and technologies that have been developed by NC State faculty, staff, and students, and works to evaluate new inventions, protect intellectual property, identify market opportunities, and license innovations to companies within industry for further development.

I am also responsible for providing guidance on non-software related copyrighted works.

Selected accomplishments include:• I have negotiated license agreements that have brought in significant revenue for NC State >$2MM in upfront payments alone, not including milestone fees, equity, patent reimbursement, or running royalties.• Helped launch over 12 university startup companies bases upon NC State licensed intellectual property. Of these companies, 9 have already secured STTR/SBIR funding and/or outside investment or have already begun selling licensed products. • Collaborated with university sponsored research office and partnership office to improve relationships with existing strategic industry partners and recruit new ones.• Mentor and Executive in Residence for the TEC program, a two semester course with the Poole College of Management at NC State, which engages MBA, PhD, and Master’s students to develop business strategy for moving forward with startup company formation based-off of university technologies.• Strategically abandoned historic patents, with upcoming maintenance fees resulting in significant savings to the university.• Provided strategic input in developing office SWOT analysis and priorities, for a report delivered to the Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Economic Development.*Solved unique contract and compliance challenges.*Worked with government funded research centers and consortium and provide critical assistance in carrying out and interpretation of the bylaws relating to the treatment of intellectual property.*Held temporary signature authority, when leadership was out of the office; no revolution nor rebellion occurred while left behind.

Managed a portfolio of NCSU technologies primarily focused in materials engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and textiles, as well as a portfolio of copyrighted works, which included textbooks, educational software, and database rights.Evaluated invention and copyright disclosures for technical and commercial merit.Coordinated patent filing strategy with outside counsel including decisions regarding filing appeal briefs, responding to office actions, and drafting and amending claims.Developed marketing strategies to target potential licensees and assisting the development of NCSU start up companies.Negotiated and drafted a variety of license and option agreements, along with other agreements (CDA, MTA, IIA, etc.) involving a wide range of complexity.

A program in which graduate Business, Engineering & Science students are placed in multi-disciplinary teams and assigned a portfolio of technologies and a team of Executives-in-Residence as mentors. Students apply the TEC Algorithm to their portfolios as they learn each phase. The final deliverable is a business plan suitable as the basis for launching a new, high growth venture.
