About Brian Berg

In this "About" section... To me it's been "about" building as many of the infinite, cool conceptual ideas into products that are useful and enjoyable to customers (and me), in the finite amount of time that's available. In the process, I also find that it's "about" making corporate America (little-by-little) a better, more inspiring and rewarding place by 1. identifying personal and team goals around eliminating inefficiencies in order to do things better and more rapidly 2. swiftly conquering the challenges, and 3. enjoying the satisfaction of "winning" ...by successfully achieving those goals, making customers happy, beating the competition, etc. While perhaps somewhat by fate, it's also been "about"1. questioning whether one should focus on products of personal interest and passion, or 2. get lured away to other products and industries according to whatever fascinating application one's expertise might also be applied to.As such, the following LinkedIn profile summary emerges: • Products spanning multiple industries – consumer electronics to internet/mobile; including entertainment, • All levels of development - from managing teams to hands-on coding with multiple languages and platforms, • Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) architecture and, previously, Software-Defined Radio (SDR) • Directing of Full Lifecycle - from marketing strategy and algorithm research, to engineering, QA and final release, • DSP and Comms. methodologies and technologies including speech, audio, images and video - synthesis, compression and streaming (Multimedia, AI, HMI, etc.).For more details see the "6 Experiences" (bottom-up if interested in the chronology)...

Vehicle Communications

Comms...Vehicular / Powersports Industry: Networking, SOA and the continuation of Software-Defined X- Common assumption of CAN products is that they need to be converted to ethernet to reap the benefits of SOA.- IEEE VTC: Presented a framework that attempts to lay out how the benefits of SOA can be achieved on CAN via remote procedure call (RPC) API, IDL, etc., CAN-related constructs; demonstrating how the benefits are achieved and the current limitations.- built-in future-protection for CEP-based machine-learning approaches for predictive diagnostics, etc. -several new techniques for distributed edge computing of statistics directly from vehicle sensors captured prior to data compression.

Jun 2016 - Present

Research And Development Engineer

DSP ...related to statistics / detection...electronic parts distribution industry: Machine Learning and Computer Vision- Demand Creation programs provided by suppliers, where distributors are rewarded for providing technical expertise in getting parts designed into an OEM product, require the distributor to register those "design wins"- However, when this technical expertise is provided in the concept and prototype phase, before it's known whether or not the product is going to make it to market (or even what the ultimate product is by the end), the tracking can be difficult and that technical assistance can be forgotten.- Identified a machine language algorithm using NLP to analyze OEMs' orders and identify likely design wins for supplier registration follow-up.- Upon training over 5M invoices (over 20M ordered parts) for design relationships along with some web scraping, algorithm identified key parts from the order (for example those that were new and cutting edge smart parts, required particular enclosures, etc.) and part combinations that would most likely be used to design a new and complete product.- Used BagOfWords, popular for identifying semantic relationships in multi-dimensional vector space between words; e.g., King - Man + Woman = Queen.- Analyze video feed using computer vision approaches (e.g., blob detection) by isolating overlapping or connected parts and filtering parts from artifacts/noise. -Over $5M savings from shipments of extra parts, follow-up shipments from short orders, manual labor, part handling injuries, etc.

Founder

Dimmersion, Ltd Liability Co

Audio/Video Processing...Social Media Industry: Before Snapchat and Tik Tok.Launched 1sTAKES.tv - a site for collaboratively creating what I referred to as "complementary social content" allowing people to contribute their "TAKES" (i.e., audio tracks and potentially overlaid video effects) to the vast availability of video on the internet.- Intended to be an online community authorship and multimedia expression app where, unlike sites like Wikipedia, content consists of multimedia tracks which are overlaid on previously contributed content rather than overwritten or replaced.- Target applications were to include collaborative DIY HowTo's, collaboratively built "audiences" over amateur (e.g. selfie) performances as well as professional performances (transforming a studio recording to a live performance).- Included a social networking platform, video-jockey (VJ) software, and an embedded AS3/starling/feathers based streaming player which communicated with the html5 youtube iframe player via Javascript.

Director Of Software / Technology Strategy

San Jose, California, Us

Back to the roots...Speech/Audio DSP...Consumer Electronics, Pro Audio and Cinema Industries: Coding Of All Kinds (Viterbi, Huffman, Multichannel Audio; and C/C++, etc.)- Transitioning from HP and joining a less structured startup for the first time...became the natural lead for the introduction of Software Engineering.- Even the rollout of a corporate standard version control system was a welcomed change; especially when their new OS-based Cinema Media Player was running a year late.- With DTS as only an optional DVD format, the opportunity to direct software engineering during the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD format wars offered another new challenge, as well as new opportunities for the company.- Faced with the reality that the new DTC-HD Master Audio Suite would take us 2 years to develop, along with the accepted truth that "Content Is King"; being first-to-market with a lossless audio codec (vs Dolby) was crucial.- Reached out to plugin vendor for ProTools (the defacto standard DAW used by all major studios), to create the industry first audio encoding plugin from a major surround-sound company.- Within weeks Disney, Fox, Sony, etc were authoring new DTS lossless multichannel audio- Once DTS-HD MAS (Master Audio Suite) was also distributed (on schedule and over a year before the Dolby lossless encoder), MAS was also producing encodings (in less than half the time of the competitor's encoder).- Subsequently - investigated the landscape of new technologies in digital entertainment such as audio, video, 3D (stereoscopic, image-based rendering, object-based coding), etc.

Jan 2002 - Aug 2012

Research And Development Engineer

Houston, Texas, Us

DSP / Comms...Wireless smartphone industry: Nokia to Apple, and CMMI:- In addition to managing and developing HP's digital filter system, also worked with Ptolemy simulation as well as digital synthesis teams.- First exposure and intrigue with corporate processes like HP's signature "Open-door policy", "management by walking around", as well as new SE processes.- As a new engineer, humbled to be hired by the renowned Hewlett Packard, it was a surprise at the time to learn from our auditors that we weren't even at CMMI level 2 (out of 5).- First major customer was Nokia; the cell phone empire at the time. From first-hand experience working on SDR technologies, the looming transformation to software was very apparent.- After working through the era of 1G, 2G, 3G and iPhone it was time to get back closer to the roots...(see XPeri / DTS experience)

1994 - 2001 ~7 yrs

Member Of Technical Staff

DSP / Comms Roots...Bell Wireline Telecoms Industry - Speech Processing- Internship from Bellcore; the Bell Lab's spinoff as a result of Judge Greene's divestiture of AT&T that formed the "Baby Bells"- Exposed to the fascinating world of speaker identification, speech recognition and synthesis which led to the ultimate dissertation topic.- Speech synthesis system was called Orator; renowned for its accurate pronunciation of names at the time for applications like directory look-up- Wireless cell phone technology was transforming the industry resulting in competition between the Baby Bells resulting in uncertainties with Bellcore.- Despite the offer for a full-time hire, Bellcore was very helpful in finding alternative full-time options for me as well like Dragon Systems, BBN (Bolt Beranek and Newman), etc.- Upon connecting me to Janet Baker, was particularly interested in Dragon Systems under development in Boston (in parallel with the Orator development in New Jersey) which, after multiple acquisitions, became the heart of Nuance, Inc's ASR, ultimately used for Siri.- Decided to take a position with HP as the first DSP engineer working on digital transformations of mobile phones; Over-/Under-sample, Digital IF...as used in SDR;
