Taking personal ownership of situations, containing them and working to a resolution.. Technical Director For Mobile App

Perth, Australia

Always looking for new and innovative ways to apply myself to my chosen profession of Software Engineering, I have been busy!Provided technical direction for a mobile app under development for management of sporting events.

Dec 2016 - Feb 2017

Program Solution Leader

Ibm

Perth, Australia

Managing Development & Level 3 Support for a subset of our product portfolio. This included several releases over a number of years.Responsible for the development, test and release of System Service Monitor (SSM) & ITCAM for Transactions/Internet Service Monitoring (ISM). Focused on ensuring that both products released on all versions, on all platforms being released every quarter. Also responsible for L3 for SSM & ITCAM for Transactions. Focused here on building relationships with L2/field and getting the backlog of issues from the field to historic lows.

Apr 2013 - Dec 2016

Software Test Manager

Ibm

Perth, Australia

Managing small teams of 3 to 12 people on a variety of products, that operated on a wide range of platforms and were developed in C/C++ & Java. All products were in the "system, service or application monitoring" space.Starting from IBM's formal waterfall development approach, I was responsible for testing all software developed in house. This then transitioned on a project by project basis to Agile methodology over a period of years. In addition to the local test team, I also managed remote teams in India and China and transitioned test activities from India to China. We also provided remote test support to teams based in USA operating in Agile mode. So we got to see offshoring from both ends.

May 2006 - Apr 2013

Software Release Manager

Perth, Australia

Reporting to the global Release manager in UK, responsible for testing all products out of the Perth office. I also worked with lead engineers in UK, exploring ways to apply what we had learned about testing, test metrics and automation to products in the UK.Successfully transferred testing of SSM from Perth to outsource company in India.Transferred testing for ISM product, much larger than SSM, from UK to Perth. Our biggest challenge here was that ISM was composed of a collection of about 20 internet service monitors, mostly by different authors with each monitor having its own test "personality". Successfully built a new and automated test environment that extended and built upon some of our SSM automations.Rolled out use of VMWare into our test lab.

Oct 2003 - Apr 2006

Software Test Manager

Network Harmoni

Perth, Australia

Reporting to the VP of Engineering, the role covered formal Testing and Quality Assurance.Starting from nothing, built a test team, test lab, test framework and test suites that allowed our flagship product (SSM) to be auto-tested with a high degree of confidence in component coverage on all platforms. Established the culture of "paired programming" where developers and testers worked as buddies. This helped ensure that the code being produce by development worked in our test environments and that testers got an early understanding of what the functional test requirements were going to be.Liaised with business partners that provided inputs on early access to new releases of SSM plus any features/updates needed to (as this had a significant impact on testing).Introduced the concept and delivered a full automated staged build process. This was an excellent example of a technology (in this case automation) shifting "left" (from Test back up into Development) in the organisation.Established the process for formally managing all software releases, ensuring all planned defects addressed, adding new test cases as needed, logging and grading defects, software binaries and source archived etc.
