After the third and final day of the Texas bar exam I signed the lease on my first business where I sold stuff on eBay for other people. This was a far cry from sitting in a 40 story glass building behind a desk working 60 hours a week making a decent salary as a corporate tax attorney. Now I was sitting in a dilapidated storefront that included a few dry cleaners, pizza joint and liquor store working 80 hours a week making less than minimum wage!Around 2005 I went to a networking lunch near the Astrodome with some other Houston area shippers. This is just like the promise Dominoes used to make, 30 minutes or free. But I never saw any free packages, I never saw any credits on my invoices, I never got an apology email or call. Why not spend some time and figure out what this was all about, thats just what I did. I quickly started finding late packages and actually getting money back, it worked. It took me a few hours a day to monitor all my packages. I had to track all the packages by hand, determine when they should have arrived by hand, determine if any tracking events that were outside UPS or FedEx’s control to prevented the on time delivery, then pick up the phone and call when I had found a late package that warranted a refund. In 2006, Refund Retriever was launched with a handful of very trusting and patient shipping accounts. Since those humble beginnings we have been through 5 versions of our auditing software, a feature article in the Houston Chronicle, an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, numerous trade shows like IRCE/eBay Live/ASD, and multiple partnership integrations. These companies include Shopify, Big Commerce, Atandra, Shipworks, 3dCart and a Magento.
