About Brian C. Payne
I've worn a lot of hats throughout my career. I'm ambitious, creative and versatile, and have a multi-disciplinary background in geoscience, business and computing. I am a decisive and energetic leader who develops and drives projects to successful completion. I'm a problem solver. I have exceptional communication and presentation skills. I remain enthusiastic to learn new skills, and eager to mentor others. I stay very active on many fronts. Most recently, I discovered a product design problem in a niche market, so I developed and begin distributing my own solution. As a wise person once said, "Find a need and fill it." The success of my offering has exceeded all of my expectations, but more importantly has been one of the most rewarding endeavors I've been involved with. It's only going to get better. When I tell people about this project, they are amazed at what I have accomplished. They ask "How did you know how to do that?" The answer is easy, and is exactly what smart and resourceful people do. "I learned by doing, and I figured it out!" Simply stated, that is what I do. I figure things out. I've spent my entire career analyzing data, solving problems and fixing things in the oil patch, and I'm eager to move on to different industries and disciplines. I want to solve problems involving product/brand development, marketing, operations, and so on. If you want a smart and resourceful person who can recognize problems, ask the right questions and develop new ideas, then I'm ready for all of your challenges.

Role listed
Inventor, Developer, Distributor
During COVID, we all had to make adjustments. Some of those adjustments had incredibly positive results. The "Connected Fitness" space exploded, as people wanted to exercise and had to do so from their homes. I already used an "Erg" or "Rowing Machine," but I started to use it a lot more. I discovered that there is a problem with rowing machines that is almost universal, and that is comfortably and securely holding one's feet. Although a common complaint, there simply was not a satisfactory solution to the problem. My product, "RowStraps" has changed that. Using some ingenuity, experimentation and engineering, I developed a solution that dramatically improved my experience. Now, I have decided to share it with the rest of the rowing community. I launched "RowStraps" in early November of 2021, and have had an incredible response. RowStraps.com was rolled out in October 2022. There are innumerable marketing avenues to pursue, and I've decided to grow the brand slowly and have some fun along the way! The most important aspect of this endeavor is that I found a problem, created a solution, and get to experience the joy and gratitude from satisfied customers!
Director, Geoscience Data & Applications
After initially consulting for the company, returned as an employee to lead the data management group. Managed the multi-client 2D/3D seismic library for new acquisition and reprocessed programs. Completed quality control (QC) of seismic and interpretation data, managed a new and improved entitlements database and worked with third party vendor to deliver data to clients. Also worked with the E&P Advisors group, managing subsurface data and applications for proprietary and multi-client projects. • Prior to my arrival, there were major issues with a lack of internal quality control for seismic data being delivered to clients. This resulted in costly re-deliveries and a strain on the relationship with the customers. Instituted a rigorous QC process that involved looking at the deliverables from the perspective of an end-user, avoiding costly and embarrassing mistakes. • Spearheaded an effort to move all SEGD field tape data to the “Cloud”. Many of the company’s surveys are over 10 years old and approaching the end of their life span as physical media. Taking advantage of cloud storage is far more cost effective than making new copies on physical media, and provides a long-term, low-cost solution. • Led an ongoing effort to QC the 600,000 km of the existing data library to the same standards as our new product offerings.
Senior Geoscientist And Data Management Specialist
After being gone for two years, "we got the band back together" to finish what we started! In September 2017, against all odds, we safely and successfully drilled the deepest offshore well in Africa, at just under 3000 meters of water depth. It was a non-commercial well, and left the company in a precarious financial situation. The company filed for bankruptcy in December 2017. It was a great organization to work for, with people who simply knew how to get things done with limited resources and the odds stacked against them. It was an unfortunate way to end the story, but the lessons and experiences I had at Hyperdynamics were invaluable in many ways. There was never a dull moment, whether I was working with vendors, presenting to potential partners, exchanging data/interpretation with project partners, or a special project such as building a virtual seismic database for the Guinean Oil Ministry.
Consultant - Geotechnical / Data Management
During my time at Ion, I focused on solving problems and improving processes. While I was there, the company shrunk by more than half, leaving more work for a smaller staff, meaning most people had to do more than their fair share. Although I was technically not an employee, I still managed a small team that provided geotechnical support to the interpreters, data processors, and sales/marketing staff. I also oversaw seismic data management and liaised with the vendor that delivered Ion's data to clients. In my role, I used my extensive experience with SMT Kingdom, 2D/3D data loading and data management. The biggest impact I made was implementing a final QC process before the data went out the door to clients. This process improved the final products, avoiding the costs and headaches of re-delivery, not to mention increasing customer satisfaction.
Senior Geoscientist And Data Management Specialist
Integral part of a geoscience team focused on frontier offshore exploration in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. Directed the transformation from standalone workstations to a state-of-the-art Kingdom SMT environment with terabytes of seismic data. Responsible for overseeing the acquisition of three proprietary 3D surveys covering over 7500sq km. Involved in well planning and operations when the company drilled the first well in Guinea since 1977. Played many roles in a fast-paced company environment, and was called upon to do a variety of special projects.• Managed geoscience software and associated data, mentored team in interpretation software and workflows, liaised with outside vendors for studies/analyses, prepared geophysical reports for the Ministry of Mines, conducted geoscience training for Ministry representatives and summer interns, and represented company at industry events. • Acted as seismic operations liaison with Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) during the acquisition of two 3D surveys in 2010, and for the seismic processing over the first half of 2011. Managed seismic acquisition observers, MMOs, project cost management, seismic quality control, gravity/magnetics processing, and all associated data management. Fulfilled the same roles in 2011 for a 4000 sq km survey completed by CGG, this time starting with the seismic acquisition tender process.• Organized data rooms for farming down interest in company’s concession, working with numerous New Ventures teams from both foreign and domestic companies. The company successfully sold operatorship to Tullow in December 2012.
Senior Computing Geoscientist
Member of a five-person team that established a U.S. subsidiary in Houston to do advanced technical work for Kuwait Energy Company’s projects in the Former Soviet Union and Middle East. Built an exploration office from the ground up, managing numerous vendors and consultants to establish a state-of-the-art PC network and Linux Landmark environment. • Organized an incredible amount of sub-standard data from all over the world to create Landmark interpretation projects. Managed seismic and well data from Russia, Latvia, Ukraine, Iraq, Pakistan, and Egypt; all areas where data quality control is paramount to starting interpretation. • Worked under great pressure to manage multiple projects at once. Upon starting the office, every division of the parent company wanted our team to do their work as a top priority.
Manager, Geoscience Systems
Managed a team of 12 employees and contractors, supporting over 80 geoscientists across domestic and international exploration divisions. Responsible for geoscience application support, seismic data loading and management, well data loading and management, design, implementation and support of Linux workstation environment, application licensing and monitoring, and vendor relations.• Acted as Project Manager for implementing a completely new geoscience computing infrastructure, transitioning from a Landmark “Hosted” thin-client environment to a local Linux client environment. The company achieved a new level of performance in their computing environment, and saved over $500K/year of hosting fees.• Worked with a rapidly developing Project Management organization that made extensive use of business cases to manage resources and project staffing. Defined service level agreements between my team, Business Unit Clients and Corporate IT. • Facilitated the move and configuration of a new Disaster Recovery (DR) solution strictly for Geoscience Applications to El Paso’s Austin DR site. Using various storage tools and technologies, El Paso’s entire geoscience application suite could be accessed via thin-client from any PC in the world in the event of a disaster that shuts down main office.
Geoscience Technology Manager
Designed and managed the geoscience computing environment for a small, private equity, start-up E&P Company. Over five years, oversaw the growth of a UNIX network to 15 workstations accessing over 12 terabytes of geoscience data. Worked with hardware/software vendors and contractors to maintain an efficient and reliable computing environment with near zero downtime. • Managed over 3000 OCS Blocks (27,000 sq. mi.) of 3D seismic and gather data from multiple seismic vendors. Resolved numerous cartographic projection issues that ensured proper positioning of seismic and well data. • Used the Landmark Graphics OpenWorks (Oracle) Database as the primary receptacle for geoscience data, including wells, culture, production data, paleo, interpretation, wireline, and velocity data. Expert user of many Landmark applications and utilities. Primary application support for Gryphon’s geoscientists for all applications. • Managed physical and digital data rooms that concluded with the sale of company for $300MM in September 2005.
