Software Engineering Consultant

4810 Consulting, Ltd.

London, United Kingdom, Avignon, France, Houston, Tx

Software consulting is just another name for problem solver. Through my company, I provide cutting edge competence in building great software and web applications. While primarily focused on Ruby-on-Rails, I also work in Ember.js, a touch of C and a dash of Swift as the project requires.I'm an expert on API design, development and optimization, but I am happy among the entire stack. My specialties are taking a project from conception to market. I also have a passion for performance optimization, especially when it comes to making software do more with fewer resources. When it comes to teams, I've led small teams of 2 up to teams as large as 25 developers. That means creating or refining developer/product workflows, managing Continuous Integration strategies and frequently putting on my Project Manager hat. I also enjoy mentoring and training junior developers; I do my best to instill current best practices. While I can work in other languages when required, I'm a "Rails guy" when it comes to development philosophies. That means things like Extreme Programming, pairing, Agile. Code should be self documenting -- not through excessive comments, laborious Wikis and hundreds of Confluence pages -- but by writing clear, concise and idiomatic code as well as following conventions. For the majority of people, your application isn't so unique that breaking convention is warranted. Trust me! A clever idea is only clever if it's maintainable!Testing is important. While QA is a thing, my philosophy is that proper Test Driven Development (or at least very good test coverage) is essential for a project's long-term health. I'm not dogmatic in my testing approaches, but pragmatic.Clients have included: Rosetta Stone, Finalsite, Matalan Direct (UK), Sonic Healthcare, along with a host of smaller startups and individuals.I have a team of engineers available for work when I am not, so contact me at brian (at) icouch.me if you need top-notch help.
