I am an Accredited Professional Trustee with over 25 years of experience in managing complex and challenging situations, such as funding negotiations, restructuring, insolvency, litigation, and liability management. I have a strong actuarial background and a proven track record of founding and leading successful pensions businesses.I qualified as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in 1990 and have held a UK Scheme Actuary practising certificate since 1997. I founded and led Dalriada Trustees Limited, one of the UK’s largest firms of professional pension scheme trustees, Spence & Partners Limited, a leading firm of actuaries, and Mantle, a pension scheme administration and risk analysis software company. Together, these businesses form the 3173 group of companies, which has 250 colleagues, 7 offices, and annual turnover in excess of £30m. I am passionate about the businesses within 3173 delivering high-quality and value-added services to its clients and stakeholders, and advancing the standards and professionalism of the pensions industry.

Founder And Chief Executive Officer3173 Feb 2000 - Feb 2024Uk, GbI founded and led Dalriada Trustees Limited, one of the UK’s largest firms of professional pension scheme trustees, Spence & Partners Limited, a leading firm of actuaries, and Mantle, a pensions scheme administration and risk analysis software company. Together, these businesses form the 3173 group of companies. The group began with an investment of my own savings of £10,000 operating from a bedroom and when I stepped back as Chief Executive in 2024 the group had nearly 250 colleagues and an annual turnover of over £30m a year.I was involved in every aspect of running the business but my particular interests and where I had the biggest input were corporate culture (including EDI), change management, digital transformation, risk management, marketing and business development.I am particularly proud of my role in championing Dalriada's formal Net Zero goals across its investment portfolios and signing up to the UN supported Principles of Responsible Investment.I was raised in Cloughfern, a very disadvantaged area of East Antrim in Northern Ireland. My career was founded on a supportive home background and a great free education I was fortunate enough to access. In my leadership roles I have been a passionate advocate of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion principles in both the workplace and in the decisions taken by employers and professional trustees within Dalriada Trustees, 3173’s trustee business. -

I continue to act for Dalriada in the capacity of Professional Trustee. Many decisions taken by trustee boards are finely balanced. I firmly believe that trustee boards make better, more robust decisions where they have access to a broad-based team with experience of the diverse issues which can impact on the ability of a scheme to deliver the best possible outcomes for its members.Dalriada applies process and technology to deliver more efficient and better services to our members. We work closely with partners committed to the use of Fintech to develop online access for members where possible and this is their preference. We provide timely reporting and best in class risk management all of which contributes to an enhanced member experience and engagement when interacting with their pension scheme. My experience as a trustee is extremely broad and includes:- High profile situations involving Parliamentary and media interest- Schemes with problematical legal, data or administration issues- Large and small DB and DC schemes- Improving governance where disharmony exists within trustee boards or with other parties.- Acting as a trustee in corporate transactions.- Bulk annuity transactions (buy-outs and buy-ins).- All aspects of investment and actuarial funding of DB schemes.- Insolvency and restructuring including schemes transferring to the PPF or FAS.- Working with the PPF as a member of their Trustee and Support Services Panel- Hostile and non-hostile litigation as a trustee.- Acting a a Key Person with personal accountability for DB and DC schemes where TPR has needed to appoint a trustee including claims on the FCF -
