I earned a B.S. in Environmental Planning & Design with a minor in Sociology from Rutgers University in 2008 and gained work experience in the nonprofit world. That same year I began coursework in the Joint Ph.D. Program in Urban Systems at NJIT and Rutgers-Newark where I graduated in 2013. There, I honed my research skills and interests in criminology, sociology, and urban studies into an intensive, mixed-methods dissertation. I was a teaching assistant for undergraduate architecture and infrastructure courses for 4 years and taught a graduate-level Geographic Information Systems (GIS) class with a focus on public health. I then took a research associate position and adjunct teaching position at the University of Maryland's Center for Safe Solutions and Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice where I taught Juvenile Delinquency. I then taught an urban studies course at George Mason University in the Fall of 2019.Since June 2016 I have been working as Prince William County, Virginia’s demographer, where I have accomplished numerous technical tasks, gained formal supervisor experience, and train employees on demographic data collection and reporting. In 2016 I also pursued a Master in Professional Studies in Geospatial Information Sciences (MPSGIS) and earned the degree in 2019. Recently, I led Prince William County's 2020 Census promotion effort and worked with the community and census staff to boost the county's self-response rate to 77% (73% in 2000, 72.1% in 2010) and collaborated on redistricting. Current projects span bolstering demographic data analytics, task automation, open data initiatives, and expanding my team's staffing and roles.Specialties: Professional research and writingArcMap, Geographic Information Systems (GIS)Data collection, management, and analysisDemographyWeb DevelopmentQualitative research and analysisTeachingCommunicationPresentationTeamworkEmail: engelmann.brian@gmail.com
