I am an experienced Executive Director and Non-Executive Director with not only a very broad, but a highly successful, track record in commercial operations and relations/stakeholder management from communities to government and big business internationally. As an operational Executive Director I have led more than 1,400 people and managed a £60m P&L. As an Executive, I am a completer finisher who not only originates strategies but delivers them. I have, for an Operations Director, a very strong emphasis on longer term partnerships and trust. I am very focused on the success of my organisation and the well-being of its staff, with the patience to lead them through difficult realities and complex changes. An experienced manager of external stakeholders from governmental to local community level, often turning around difficult relationships with many different demographics, sectors, locations and ages. As a Non-Executive I bring the necessary skills of governance, ethics, respectful but honest challenge balanced with support for the Executive, coupled with a deep understanding of operational leadership, business development, high level stakeholder relationship management, community engagement and many other areas. Experienced in a wide variety of business situations from the site specific to national, my key achievements include:• Changing the relationship between a network of 50 ports and ferries, changing the ports attitudes to that of a customer, leading to an enhanced level of service. • Turning around relationships between CalMac Ferries, the community in the West of Scotland and the Government by designing and implementing a vastly more comprehensive stakeholder communication system which has met concerns, reduced complaints and directly led to service improvements. • Negotiated with trade unions revised conditions for 1600 employees (£60m payroll), reducing remuneration without losing a single day to a strike. • Advising the Government of Scotland as a leader of ongoing operations on the 2012-2022 Ferries Plan.I am now exploring opportunities to use my wealth of business (commercial, operational, people and stakeholder management, community engagement) skills to meet the objectives, within the roles of Executive and NED, for ambitious organisations seeking sustainable results.

Director Of Community And Stakeholder EngagementCalmac Ferries Limited Oct 2016 - Jan 2020Gourock, Inverclyde, United KingdomThis was a start-up, and a crucial aspect of CalMac’s successful 2016 bid to win an eight-year extension to its contract. Having led the bid process, including 24 public meetings, more intimate local communication was clearly a key demand. Having interpolated this into the bid I was asked to launch this new Directorate.Selected Achievements:• Delivered, in two years, a complete turnaround in the relationship between CalMac, the local community and their political representatives, greatly improving the atmosphere between the company and the government. • Created this engagement structure with the Western Isles and Clyde Island communities, including the first Community Board, a Chair, a twelve-member local stakeholder board, while managing relationships with unsuccessful applicants.• Successfully designed the engagement strategy, built the organisational strategy to develop it and recruited high quality staff to lead, from communications professionals to a CSR Manager.• Defended the expenditure of resources and acted as a channel of communication to the Board ensuring community messages informed decisions, including those of interest to Scottish Government Ministers.• Established a successful grant scheme for local community projects to fund better community engagement, ensuring they were effective, and the money was well governed. • Built a special relationship with youth groups including Young Scot and schools right across the islands and peninsulas of the West of Scotland, making community relationships more sustainable. -
Non-Executive DirectorSolent Gateway Limited 2018 - 2020Southampton, England, United KingdomThis was a unique situation. A Ministry of Defence port had been leased to a commercial consortium to service military and profitable ends. The conflicts between business efficiency and military readiness needed addressing and I was asked to join the Board to work with my colleagues to facilitate a successful operation of the agreement. I was also a member of this military port’s crucial safety committee. Selected Achievements:• Taking a successful leading role in recruiting the executive team to lead the repositioned company. • Building a relationship of trust with the local commanding officers and with Whitehall, understanding their lack of interest in commercial challenges, need for urgent mobilisation, and giving faith this would be done. • Advising the executive on the due diligence process for a potential cruise ship client. • Leaving the relationship with the MoD more willing to accept that commercial uses, properly risk managed and by companies aware of potential military urgent needs, were possible, enhancing potential contract lifetime value. -
Port DirectorSolent Gateway Limited Mar 2016 - Oct 2016Marchwood, England, United KingdomI was the first employee, and tasked to deliver an MoD contract to combine readiness with the potential for commercial operations. The culture clash with the Army ethos was huge and required the utmost patience and diplomacy to start this 35-year relationship in a way that ensured it would survive.Selected Achievements:• Delivering the early stages of the winning bids’ operational elements, with its hard (people and facilities) and soft (Whitehall MoD relationship management) elements.• Mastering the very hierarchical MoD decision making process (up to Major General Rank), discovering where the real decision makers were and how their fears could be assuaged to enable commercial coexistence with military preparedness. • Discovering and devising solutions to numerous health and safety issues caused by the combined military/commercial nature of the base, winning the Army’s trust that we were safe to work there.• Building relationships with an unusually complex stakeholder group including four trades unions, three councils and residents to gain the changes the licensees needed to commence commercial operations. -
Service Delivery LeadCalmac Ferries Limited Jan 2015 - Mar 2016Glasgow, United Kingdom• Defended CalMac’s future, leading the operations element (the largest) of the company’s bid activity against SERCO, faced the challenge of cost with initiatives to improve community relationships and reduce the political pressure on the Scottish Government. • Wrote, with Transport Scotland, the country’s National Ferries Plan (I have recently been asked to consider working on its replacement). • Identified the 50 most strategic ports for the network, created a new Head of Harbours to lead them, raised safety with a common approach, and changed culture to make ferries the clients of the ports, with performance improvement results. • Successfully led a negotiation (including with trade unions) modernising the terms and conditions of 1,400 employees with a £60m pay bill, that reduced remuneration despite considerable hostility, without losing a single day to a strike. -
