In January 2021 I was asked to oversee all of the portfolio of strategic projects and programmes for KCOM as a direct report to the CEO. Responsible for ensuring the key strategic direction of the KCOM is maintained and delivered through the management of the portfolio of programmes and projects across the full breadth of the KCOM business. It is a strategic leadership role, working virtually across the whole of the KCOM Group and closely with partners, vendors, industry bodies and executive team.The role entails virtual team management to achieve specific business goals, develop business opportunities and manage the strategy for business transformation. Annual budget management is plus £10m pa. Particular opportunities that are being considered/managed include; mergers and acquisitions; business restructuring; opportunity expansion; savings initiatives; enhancing the business optimisation of new technology; . Although ostensibly a strategic leadership role, my engineering proficiency and business experience and qualifications are applied readily in a diverse set of company wide opportunities that make the role very interesting at what is a great company to work with.

In November 2013 I commenced this new role for the KCOM Group, responsible for the determination, approval from board, and overseeing the implementation of the businesses technology transformation into a true IP/Optical centric next generation network architecture. It is a strategic leadership role, working virtually across the whole of the KCOM Group of businesses (Kcom/Eclipse/KC/Smart421). I work closely with the business, industry wide bodies, vendors an most notably our business partners to achieve this role.The role entails virtual team management to achieve specific business goals, develelop business opportunities and manage the strategy for transformation. CapEx management averages at c£10m pa. Particular challenges that are being addressed include; SDA for major tactical & customer projects/bids; PSN compliance; SIP-T product introduction; MSA; Partner collaborations in GTM & Transformation; Security management; Industry/Regulator representation for the group; VoIP enablement; NGIN introduction; and NGN/A enablement generally, embracing technology trends such as virtualisation. Although ostensibly a technical design lead role, I have to bring a business benefit perspective for the relevant Boards across the group to consider, determine, and then thereafter manage the implementation, into operation.

This role is to define and implement the carrier services strategy for the KCOM Group and to manage the execution of a competitive interconnect and access regime. Ensuring the business capitalises on both strategic and tactical opportunities presented through exploitation of network and technology innovation, partner relationships so to maximise the overall revenue potential across the Group. Collaborating with the Operations Director to define technical and operational strategy. Furthermore to ensure interconnect, access and numbering compliance for the KCOM Group.

Challenged to deliver a carrier network strategy that aligns itself to the wider business ambitions of the Kingston group. All tactical investments and customer opportunities requiring expenditure of more than £50k needed to be assessed and approved by Brian, who ensured that it was in keeping with the carrier and wider business strategy. A significant element of his role was the business development of key customer opportunities. Common consultation topics include; market consolidation, technology advancement, convergence of services, Next Generation Access and BT21CN implications.

Wakefield

In light of erosion of network service revenues, advancements in technology and strong market competition, Brian was asked to focus upon deriving a carrier technology strategy that aligns itself to the wider business ambitions of the Kingston group. Managing 32 FTE’s (£2.3M SG&A Costs) via two layers of management beneath, and instrumental in undertaking the outsourcing of key operational functions. Acting in a 1 in 2 Escalation Rota for significant network incidents, and had 24/7 operational responsibility also for the entire KC group duct and fibre network. Sole responsibity for Kingston/Affiniti's Network and Customer Services CapEx Spend and allocation thereof (circa £12M), and the strategic development of the KCNGN business case, technology and external communication.
