As a member of the Capital Planning group within the Financial Planning & Analysis Division, I took on the task of improving the cash flow forecast for a $950 million annual budget that covered all airline capital expenditures beyond aircraft purchases. Working with analysts from across multiple divisions, I researched root causes of problems in the forecasting process and proposed solutions that would provide for greater accuracy and, in turn, better planning of capital projects.

I spent four years serving customers in the Worker's Compensation Claims Division of The Hartford, both as a Medical Bill Examiner and as a Claims Representative. As a Claims Representative, my duties included communicating with employers, agents, government boards, medical providers, and injured workers for the purpose of investigating and analyzing claims; making determinations on coverage and compensability of reported accidents; calculating and issuing benefits; and arranging for medical treatment on accepted claims. As a Medical Bill Examiner, I was responsible for reviewing incoming patient medical bills, validating authorization and relatedness to the accepted accident, and calculating payments in accordance with state laws. I also was the priority contact for medical subrogation claims from other insurers, assisted with testing and training duties for new systems and procedures, and conducted internal quality reviews of our department's work product to assure compliance with applicable laws and company standards.

While studying for my Master's at NYU, I accepted my second Research Fellowship with the Heyman Center. With the financial world still suffering from the fallout of the Lehman Brothers collapse and the Bernie Madoff scandal, the hot-button issues of the time were systemic risk and prudential regulation. Over the course of this fellowship, the most significant project was a detailed analysis of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act that was pending before Congress and its potential implications for financial markets. While there, I also aided in the coordination of a series of lunchtime learning sessions for students at the Cardozo Law School with practitioners in securities regulation and a symposium on The Challenge of Systemic Risk Regulation that brought together major players from the investment banking and legal communities.

While also maintaining full-time enrollment at Cardozo Law School, I supplemented my student loan money by working 15 hours per week for a litigator who specialized in personal injury plaintiff and no-fault insurance defense cases. This job required me to engage in significant research on related statutory and case law while also drafting legal documents for submission to courts and arbitrators as well as responding to filings from adverse parties.

I spent the summer after my second year of law school working as a Research Fellow for the Heyman Center, located within Cardozo Law School. Over the course of this fellowship, I contributed to several research projects on issues in corporate governance and securities regulation, most significantly an in-depth analysis and comparison of the various financial regulatory structures employed by the United States, England, Australia, and European nations at the behest of the Canadian government for reference in formulating potential reforms of their regulatory system.

I spent the summer after my first year of law school as an intern working in the Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of New York. While there, I drafted several proposed decisions and memoranda of law for review by the judge on issues in bankruptcy, and I enjoyed the opportunity to observe proceedings both in that court and in the United States District Court, housed in the same building.

Together with a partner, I founded and built a small sales firm representing Pepco Energy Services to residential and commercial utility customers in northern Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia following the deregulation of gas and electricity in those markets. As part of my daily work, I negotiated contracts with our client, supervised and trained both sales and administrative staff, and monitored our regulatory compliance. I also served as a point of contact for any customer inquiries and service issues. After successfully building a growing & stable business generating over $40,000 in weekly revenue, I accepted a buyout of my equity interest from my partner to complete our business plan.

After initially entering the company as a business-to-business salesperson of paging services on behalf of Skytel, I transitioned to an administrative role that I worked periodically throughout my undergraduate career. After graduation from Syracuse University, I accepted a full-time role and progressed to a position overseeing all day-to-day operations of a sales & marketing firm employing 35 people generating annual sales of over $2.5 million/year. My responsibilities included hiring and training staff, tracking inventories and accounts payable, calculating commissions for sales people, and coordinating quarterly events for regional affiliates with average attendance of 250 people.
