About Brian G Rash
Experienced PhD scientist with expertise in stem cells, neurobiology, developmental biology, neurodegeneration, congenital brain disorders, and iPSC organoid models. Drug hunter.I am currently leading research and discovery efforts relating to clinical trials and research in Alzheimer's disease and hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), using a novel cell therapy, Lomecel-B, at Longeveron, Inc. We are studying non-amyloid mechanisms of treatment for this devastating neurodegenerative disease. Lomecel-B operates via pro-vascular and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. My research has also focused on the genetic, molecular, and cellular basis of early cerebral cortex development in both animal and organoid models. I have studied a variety of questions relating to CNS development, function and degeneration. For example I examined how cortical stem cells, known as radial glial cells, proliferate and differentiate into post-mitotic neurons, with a focus on improving drug discovery using cerebral organoids. Based on my background, I am working to improve the usefulness of organoid model systems for brain disorders, including neurological conditions during development as well as future models of neurodegenerative disorders and brain cancers. I am excited to use and develop the latest in vitro models as well as state of the art molecular, optogenetic, and cellular high content assays and data mining methods to advance drug discovery and uncover key aspects of human disease biology so that new treatments can reach the clinic.
