Brian is a retired internationally-recognized expert in optimization of mine plans and strategies for underground and surface mines and has authored a textbook on this topic. He had 50 years' experience in the mining industry.His first 22 years were spent working for mining companies in Australia and South Africa, principally in underground gold and base metals operations. Brian then joined the precursor of AMC Consultants in 1994. He worked as consultant in mine planning, design and scheduling, computer simulations of operations, technical audits, strategic reviews, feasibility studies, cut-off grade studies, and mine strategy optimizations in Australasia, Asia, Europe, and North America for nearly 30 years. Since the early 2000s, he specialized in the optimization of cut-off grades and strategic mine plans. He presented workshops on project evaluation, the theory and practical application of cut-off grades, and mine and business strategy optimization, and authored the authoritative 300-page textbook, "Cut-off Grades and Optimising the Strategic Mine Plan", published by the AusIMM in 2014.Brian was also an Instructor at Curtin University in Perth, where he presented a Project Evaluation unit in the Master of Mineral and Energy Economics program between 2013 and 2022, and was a member of the Advisory Board of the WH Bryan Mining and Geology Research Centre in the Sustainable Minerals Institute at the University of Queensland for seven years.
