About Brian Houston

I currently hold an Academic Lectureship in Knowledge Exchange at Aura: a multidisciplinary, multi-stakeholder initiative of the University of Hull, which brings together UK expertise in engineering, physical, environmental and social sciences, to support industrial and academic excellence in low-carbon innovation.Aura has dedicated facilities in the Humber – The Aura Innovation Centre (AIC), which resides at the geographical heart of an active, diverse and growing low carbon supply chain, at which I Manage the InventX facilities, teams and projects operating within this innovation space. I first joined the University of Hull in 2007, when I left previous job as a fabricator of bespoke commercial vehicle bodies at our family business in Northern Ireland (Houstons Coachworks), to undertake my Masters in Mechanical Engineering. After graduating with a first-class honours degree in 2011, I went on to support numerous research projects at the University; including research into the investigation of bed scouring around offshore wind turbine piles and bases, and a long-standing commercial relationship with Siemens Energy, where I supported the characterisation, simulation and application of Helmholtz resonators within large scale industrial gas turbines. In 2016 I took on an Academic Specialist position at the University of Hull, which saw me providing support to teaching, scholarship, research and enterprise activities within the School of Engineering at the University of Hull, and was appointed as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering within the Department of Engineering in 2019.Between 2019 and 2021 I worked as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hull, managing a large portfolio of the applied engineering curriculum within the Department of Engineering, and supporting innovation, growth and knowledge transfer, with a specific focus on low-carbon, advanced and additive manufacturing technologies.Aside from academic work I enjoy getting my hands dirty and have experience in a wide range of fabrication techniques, arts and crafts. I also enjoy sharing personal enthusiasm for engineering and I am an avid STEM enthusiast, who proactively promotes student success and widening participation through a large portfolio of co-curricular and outreach activities, both within the University and in the wider community.

  • University Of Hull
Research Associate - Thermo-Fluids And Acoustics Research Group
University Of Hull Jun 2011 - Mar 2016
Acoustics Research Centre - University Of Hull
Based in the Acoustics Research Centre at the University of Hull I work under the Thermo-fluids and Acoustics Research Group headed by Dr. Philip A. Rubini. In collaboration with the Center for Adaptive Science & Sustainability (CASS) and the Centre for Low Carbon Futures (CLCF) I supported research into the investigation of bed scouring around offshore wind turbine piles and bases. During this time I was responsible for developing a bespoke CFD method for simulating the predicted bed erosion and supporting experimental work at a specialist experimental facility at the Deep in Hull. The outcome from my work supported the development of the GRAVITAS Offshore partnership and led to a four year continued research scholarship opportunity at the University. In collaboration with Siemens Energy I have been investigating the characterisation and simulation of Helmholtz resonators for application within industrial gas turbines. This work has involved developing CFD methodologies for the computational simulation of acoustic resonant devices, design and commissioning of bespoke experimental facilities and subsequently targeted acoustic measurements; all with the aim of determining and describing key performance factors of such devices. I also utilise the high-level technical commuting language MATLAB to generate my own bespoke processing tools in order evaluate the large volume of experimental data which I collect, and to feed my research outcomes into semi-empirical models. Such models are then applied by myself and colleges, through a bespoke graphical interface which I created, to predict resonator performance for theoretical designs and aid the development and application of new resonator designs to attenuate detrimental combustor dynamics in industrial applications.

University Of Hull Sep 2011 - Jun 2015
    Hull, United Kingdom
Whilst working towards my PhD at the University I have undertaken frequent demonstrating and teaching support roles, including leading practical learning workshops on Dynamics & Vibrations, Thermodynamics, Materials and Fluid Dynamics. I have also provided technical assistance for taught specialist engineering software lessons such as ANSYS, Solidworks and Pearson's Mastering Engineering software for assessing statics assignments.
  • Houstons Coachworks Ltd.
    Tradesman
Houstons Coachworks Ltd. Oct 2003 - May 2011
    Ballymena, Northern Ireland
I began my employment with Houstons Coachworks Ltd. as a part time apprentice whilst undertaking my secondary education. Throughout this period I gained valuable people skills and engineering knowledge from working with skilled professionals. Upon completion of A-Levels I was taken on as a full time employee, working up to 48 hours a week fabricating custom lorry bodies and carrying out repairs. Throughout this period I developed a competence in the engineering principals involved and gained the responsibility of managing custom jobs from start to completion. I was also responsible for the training and delegation of work to new apprentices. The company was understanding towards my desire to develop my engineering skills and kept me on part time during my undergraduate studies.
