About Brian Reich
Coding was my gateway to being a problem solver.I started programming when I was 13 and soon forgot that other pursuits exist and might even be fun! As I plowed through high school and college I found myself working in IT, finding coding solutions to network, management, and business efficiency problems. But I also found myself armed with the critical thinking and problem solving skills that helped me find not only success, but joy, in just about any pursuit I encountered. This led to hobbies in remodeling and woodworking. It led me to branch out full time into web development. It led me to starting my own business. And it eventually led me to where I am today as the Software Team Lead at a Core Business Solutions. I now spend equal parts of my day coding and managing a growing development team. I enjoy the challenge of changing myself from the inside out from a lonely coder into a servant leader to my team and viewing my own success through the lens of team and organizational successes.

Director Of Software Development
Guiding the technical direction of CORE Compliance Platform. Managing development and DevOps teams.
Manager Of Software Development
In this role I expanded the individuals under my management. I managed my development team and added on our graphic designer and tester. I later hired another developer.During this time my team built and released a number of impressive enhancements to our software. We expanded our testing capabilities by adding over 2,000 unit tests to our codebase and using JMeter to perform load testing. We continue to assist IT with a lift and shift to AWS GovCloud. We also worked to expand our development toolset by adopting Jira, than later following the company's direction and pivoting to Monday.com. Building our SDLC in Monday was my responsibility. My biggest responsibility to date in this role has been to build a plan to rewrite and redesign the company's SaaS application. I started with research to determine the right tech stack (modern PHP, written as a REST API, and React on the front). I then used time tracking records from old projects stored in Jira to estimate the effort to rewrite the application, and plan the individual steps of that effort over the coming years.
Software Development Lead
During my time in this position I was responsible for expanding our software team in addition to my software development duties. I helped develop the security and documentation for our software and websites to pass an ISO 27001 audit. I helped develop a Software Development Lifecycle for our department. I developed onboarding materials and documentation that I didn't have when I was hired. I hired and onboarded two new developers, and took over management of those team members.During this time we worked together to establish team standards for quality, coding standards, security standards, and documentation. I implemented Peer Review for our work, via GitHub Pull Requests and developed standards for how we performed peer review.During this time COVID hit, and my team was able to quickly pivot to remote work thanks to some of the practices I put in place earlier in my time with the company. And of course, as a team, we build and released numerous enhancements to the application during this time. Much of my development work was focused on backend enhancements to develop a REST API for the company by introducing standard framework components like routing and dispatching, controllers, service layers, and models. We also began a long cloud migration project.
Software Developer
I was the second developer at CORE Business Solutions, the first being the co-owner. I was hired to help speed up web development on a large legacy codebase consisting of about a million lines split up between Perl, PHP, and JavaScript. During my time in this position I focused on improving our development methodologies and bringing them into the modern era. I got our code into Git and taught the other developer source control. I created a virtualized development environment to match our production environment, so we could stop "testing live." I learned the nuances of the codebase, and build and released enhancements to the application, including a new version of a feature that user's historically found too difficult to use without help.
Owner
I make stuff. I fix stuff. I build stuff. I grow stuff. I cook stuff. Then I make videos and blog posts about the process so others can enjoy the satisfaction of mastering their world with their own two hands. (Basically I got tired of working long hours doing work I don't love so I could pay other people to do the tasks I do enjoy. Stopped working so much. Started doing more. Wallet is emptier. Life is richer. No regrets.)
Ceo
From 2003-2014 I ran Reich Web Consulting as a side hustle. In 2014 I left my full-time employer and began to freelance full-time. During my time running Reich Web Consulting I developed numerous WordPress websites for various small and medium-sized businesses. Being a developer by trade and background, I carved out a niche in this space by being able to deliver customizations that most WordPress shops simply cannot.I offered a highly security, very "hands off" WordPress hosting experience that customers loved. My development expertise also took me in some unique directions during this time. I took up an API project for a print on demand company in Florida. I worked with them for several years. During that time I maintained and expanded an API started by another developer in .Net which accepted orders from their customers. I extended that API to support Shipping workflows, work tracking, and integrated it with API's from vendors like Shutterfly, Zazzle, and more. I successfully automated the business of a multimillion dollar company, and that's the work I am most proud of to date.
Web Developer
.Net web developer. I spend the bulk of my time working on an in-house CMS written in ASP.Net Web Forms. I consider myself fortunate in that I'm often given complex problems to solve and unique custom tools to build out instead of slinging markup and styling. I spend a lot of time with SQL Server and C#, as well as in JavaScript building out slick front-end solutions with jQuery, KendoUI, and others.
It Specialist
As an IT Specialist at SUN Area Technical Institute there are a lot of responsibilities that fall under my title. I'm responsible for setup and maintenance of all computer equipment including PC's, laptops, mobile devices such as phones and tablets, and virtual desktop infrastructure using a VMWare infrastructure and Pano Logic thin clients. I'm responsible for managing our print fleet and any other devices used on the network such as industry tools like laser engravers, CNC routers, automotive troubleshooting tools, etc.I'm also responsible for server instructure including Microsoft Active Directory, Group Policy, VMWare vSphere, ESXi, and Horizon View, etc.I also have completely redesigned our website using WordPress, created a custom template and several custom plug-ins for managing class data and adult education registrations. I have several internal applications that I've developed using Zend Framework and PHP.
