In this role, I resolved conflicts and addressed inappropriate physician behavior through coaching, monitoring, and following up with other surgeons across specialties. Additionally, I served as a member of the executive committee, comprised of physicians, administrators, and a lawyer and acted as a liaison between doctors, administrators, and the hospital board. As part of my role on the executive committee, I discussed and made recommendations on board-policy proposals and reviewed cases of physician misconduct, with the authority to suspend privileges.Key Contribution:►Ensured bylaw changes maintained the ability of physicians to practice, as well as consistency across the hospital system, by working with the lawyer representing the hospital.

As director, I conceived, developed, and served as the face of this program from inception. My work included writing the criteria for the credentials that allowed physicians to perform procedures, building and coordinating the team, and interacting with hospital administrators regarding personnel. In addition, I performed investigational studies for medical devices and traveled to Europe to train in catheter-based valve replacements.Key Contributions:►Secured $1.5M from the hospital board to build out an operating room dedicated to structural heart procedures.►Generated $1M in funding through the program, which led to serving as principal investigator on multiple studies through Medtronic Corporation and Edwards Life Sciences.►Played a key role in the hospital becoming the second U.S. facility to perform aortic valve replacement with catheter-based therapy, following FDA approval.

Recruited to promote advanced techniques, I brought new procedures to the practice, teaching and speaking to global audiences on minimally invasive valve surgery and catheter-based valve replacements and repair. Additionally, I performed surgical procedures and managed 4-7 cardiac surgeons and 2-4 vascular surgeons, opened and oversaw 2 additional cardiac surgical programs at Naples Community Hospital, expanded the practice to include a dedicated vascular surgeon, and built out vascular labs in office settings. I also represented the practice in hospital contract negotiations and at professional meetings.Key Contributions:►Created an additional income stream, incorporating a perfusion company and selling products related to the practice. ►Negotiated sale of the perfusion company following adoption of the Stark Law, which prohibited product sales by physicians.►Maximized revenue despite declining Medicare expenditures for cardiac surgery, allowing Gulf Coast to remain independent far longer than most cardiac surgical practices.►Created an organizational structure to address clinical and nonclinical issues that facilitated the opening of satellite offices.►Developed the aortic valve switch (Ross) procedure in the adult population and helped achieve more widespread use in the U.S. ►Organized and lectured at the Ross Symposium, an international conference held in Ft. Myers with live cases performed.
