I am Brian Menard and I graduated from Cal Poly SLO with a Bachelor's and Master's in Mechanical Engineering in April 2022. I am passionate about space exploration, automotive vehicles, renewable energy and innovative technologies.I highly recommend checking out my online portfolio at www.brianmenard.net for a detailed look at my experience and capabilities.Over the course of my college career, I totaled one internship at SpaceX and four internships at Northrop Grumman. Through these roles, I developed a professional skill set spanning design, analysis, testing, and rapid development all while taking on responsibilities equivalent of a full-time engineer. I am excited for the challenges my future roles have in store. At Cal Poly SLO, I led Cal Poly PROVE Lab as both Program Manager and Chief Engineer on our Endurance Car project, an electric sports car designed to travel over 1000 miles on a single charge. Over the past four years in these roles, I was responsible for all aspects of the team, from sponsor acquisitions and funding to final sign-off on all vehicle designs. In addition to my Endurance Car roles, I helped design, build and test PROVE lab’s first project which aims to be the world’s fastest solar powered car. I have learned innumerable lessons from these projects and teams, and I am indebted to all those who led me in my early years and those who have followed me since. In terms of career aspirations, I aim to one day lead an engineering team as Chief Engineer in the development of an exciting yet challenging technical program. Learning new skills, knowledge and abilities excites me, and look for a fast-paced work environments which have new lessons to teach every day. In leadership roles I enjoy staying grounded in technical problem solving while empowering my team via mentorship, personal development and project ownership. As I chart my path towards Chief Engineer, I am currently looking to expand the breadth of my skill set across a wide variety of engineering disciplines and roles. Thanks!

Engineering Analysis Intern: Vehicle StructuresNorthrop Grumman Jun 2021 - Dec 2022Redondo Beach, California, United StatesAs an Engineering Analysis Intern I developed thermal, vibrational and structural simulations for the Next-Gen OPIR missile launch detection satellite. I additionally created a variety of simulation and design trade studies to determine optimal designs and methodologies. Outside of my engineering responsibilities, I co-lead the establishment of an intern program and presented findings to senior leadership. -
Endurance Car Chief EngineerCal Poly Prototype Vehicles Laboratory (Prove Lab) Sep 2018 - Dec 2022As Chief Engineer, I led the Endurance Car from initial concept design all the way up to manufacturing. In this role I worked with my team to establish preliminary designs for every system on the car and provided technical guidance & mentorship for all systems. As designs reached maturity, I assumed responsibility for the final sign off authority on all vehicle designs. Through this position I gained an interdisciplinary skillset and the ability to manage technical projects which I am inexperienced in. -
Endurance Car Program ManagerCal Poly Prototype Vehicles Laboratory (Prove Lab) Sep 2017 - Jun 2021Cal Poly SloOver the span of four years, I co-lead a team of 30-70 students on the Endurance Car project, a long-range electric sports car which aims to travel 1000 miles on a single charge. As Program Manager, I ran every aspect of the organization, from day-to-day operations and project schedules to budget management and sponsor acquisitions. Through my time at PROVE Lab, I helped transform the team from its early developmental stages into a professional pseudo-startup. -
Solar Car Mechanical LeadCal Poly Prototype Vehicles Laboratory (Prove Lab) Jun 2018 - Jun 2019Cal Poly SloAs Mechanical Lead, I supervised and assisted with mechanical design work on the Solar Car. As a part of this position, I designed, analyzed, and machined the rear suspension of the car. Using finite element analysis tools, I optimized the trailing arm suspension to minimize weight while satisfying its structural requirements. -
Solar Car Manufacturing LeadCal Poly Prototype Vehicles Laboratory (Prove Lab) May 2017 - Jun 2019Cal Poly, SloAs Manufacturing Lead, I designed and machined a total of 42 molds and eight mold assemblies for the composite manufacturing of the Solar Car. I also worked with our industry sponsor Westerly Marine to design, machine and assemble the 20 foot long, 13-part mold for vehicle's lower shell. Over the course of this position, I dedicated over 600 hours into mold design and manufacturing, 350 of which were spent operating CNC machines. -
Engineering Analysis & Design Intern: Mechanisms & DeployablesNorthrop Grumman Jun 2020 - Sep 2020Redondo Beach, California, United StatesFor my third internship at Northrop, I supported spacecraft actuator programs as both a structural analyst and designer. As an analyst I created a finite element model of an entire actuator, thus shortening program schedule by 3 months by performing full-time analyst responsibilities. As a designer, I created designs and drawings for tooling fixtures to improve the accuracy and reliability of existing manufacturing processes. -
Engineering Analysis Intern: Mechanisms & DeployablesNorthrop Grumman Jun 2019 - Sep 2019Redondo Beach, California, United StatesAs an Engineering Analysis Intern, I analyzed a full spacecraft actuator assembly consisting of over 50+ individual components. I gained experience analyzing bolted joint interfaces and large finite element model creation. I also developed new modeling methods via a series of trade studies and improved department analysis capabilities of bolted joint interfaces. -
Test Engineering InternNorthrop Grumman Jun 2018 - Sep 2018San Diego, California, United StatesFor my first internship I performed static load testing and verification of satellite flight hardware, including the components of the Jupiter-3 and ISS CRS-2 satellites. I also overhauled my department’s scheduling tools and developed a master scheduling system in Microsoft Project to manage the 50+ satellite programs & personnel.
