Representative Brian Sims is a distinguished policy attorney & civil rights advocate who represents Center City Philadelphia in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. A staunch advocate for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, & Queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights, Sims became the first openly gay member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and remains one of the most visible Out elected officials in the United States.Prior to his election to public office, Sims served as staff counsel for policy and planning at the Philadelphia Bar Association and also served as both the president of the board of directors of Equality Pennsylvania and as chairman of Gay and Lesbian Lawyers of Philadelphia (GALLOP). A member of the national campaign board of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund until August 2011, Sims continues to lecture regularly about the policy and legal challenges facing diverse and marginalized communities He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Bloomsbury University and a Juris Doctor degree in International & Comparative Law from Michigan State University College of Law. He has also been a Fellow at the Center for Progressive Leadership as well as Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Sims is the recipient of the 2014 National Champion of Choice Award from NARAL Pro-Choice America, and the American Bar Association Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity’s national Stonewall Award. Brian Sims was elected in November 2012 as the State Representative for Center City Philadelphia’s 182nd District of the Pennsylvania House. In winning the election, Brian became Pennsylvania’s first openly LGBT person elected to the State Legislature in its 225-year history.As the former captain and a defensive lineman for the Bloomsburg University football team who came out to his football team after leading them to the Division II National Championship, Brian has become a highly sought out public speaker at colleges and universities on LGBT and other civil rights issues. His work with colleges and universities dovetails well with the Firm’s Higher Education Practice.In addition to his state bar admission, Brian is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the District of New Jersey.
