About Brian L R.

As an interdisciplinary human performance scientist and biomedical engineer, I’ve been privileged to help push forward the field’s understanding of human mobility through electronic data collection—dividing much of my career between co-developing solutions to complex biomechanical problems and guiding graduate student inquiry into concepts incorporating 3D motion wearable technology, kinetic data, silicon materials, and pressure sensors. My research and clinical work have been uniquely shaped by my experiences as a person with amputations, bringing atypical insights and intimate user experience into scientific investigation. Those blended experiences enhance my technical knowledge of electromechanical systems and ability to explain the user experience, inspiring nascent R&D areas, and fueling my interests in sensor technologies and wearables (e.g., watches, sports devices)—specifically in developing mechanisms to better collect and study human performance in real-world situations.Collectively, I’ve developed or co-developed 11 biomechanical development tools and prototyping devices, as well as 16 human performance research studies; produced a range of scientific presentations and publications; and partnered and collaborated with corporate and government teams and institutions in developing prototypes, methodologies, and protocols for future products.EXPERTISE: Technical competence and systematic thinking spans physics, math, programming, and anatomy, with R&D leadership across bilateral controllers, 3D motion collection sensors (accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers) and algorithms, biomaterials, and biofeedback devices.NOTE: There is another person with the name Brian Ruhe who resides in Canada. I am not related to him and I do not agree with his statements on social media.
