Brian Manuel is a leading EdTech consultant who specializes in Public Speaking and Argumentation. He currently serves as the Director of Policy Debate at Stanford University, Director of Debate at Edgemont High School in New York, Chairman of the National Debate Coaches Association and Tournament Administrator at the University of Kentucky, along with consulting for the National Speech & Debate Association. Brian is a member of the Barkley Forum’s prestigious Gold Key Society, and the 2016 Val A. Browning Director of the Year and 2008 Michael Bacon Coach of the Year.An early advocate of distance learning and leader in digital debate since 2004, his contributions facilitated the transition to online competition in the wake of the global pandemic. With more than 20 years of experience in education and the nonprofit sector, Brian is also widely recognized for his competitive success as a debate coach and revitalization of traditional debate programs.He coached the #1 NDCA-ranked Public Forum Debate team in the country this season, winning the 2022 Timothy C. Averill Cup for Season-Long Excellence, as well as two Phyllis Flory Barton Top Speakers in Policy Debate at the 2013 and 2019 NSDA National Speech & Debate Tournaments, respectively. His students have championed numerous high-school and college invitationals, across all three major debate events—including five state titles—and advanced to elimination rounds at the TOC, NSDA, NDCA, NCFL, NDT and CEDA national championship tournaments, with finalists in 2007 and 2012.Over the course of his professional career, Brian has coached for Harvard University, College Preparatory School, Cathedral Preparatory School and his alma mater, Scranton High School, among others. He previously taught workshops at the Stanford National Forensic Institute, Millennial Speech & Debate, Institute for Speech & Debate, University of Michigan, University of Kentucky and Georgetown University.
