Brian McKenzie retired from his position as Associate Professor at California State University, East Bay. He is now living on the island of Kauai. Brian received his BA degree from the University of British Columbia in 1974, his MBA from the University of Victoria in 1997 and his PhD from the University of Victoria in 2003. Throughout his PhD studies, Brian was a lecturer in the University of Victoria’s Faculty of Business. He was a member of the teaching team, which won the 2000 United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship Model Undergraduate Program Award and the 1999 Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division Innovations in Pedagogy Award. Brian spent the 1999-2000 academic year in Massachusetts in a visiting lectureship at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he assisted in the start-up of the WPI Venture Forum.Brian’s dissertation research worked towards the development of a grounded theory of entrepreneurship through the collection and analysis of oral histories of self-identified entrepreneurs. The dissertation was a finalist in the National Federation of Independent Business – Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice 2003 Dissertation Award. His paper “Collecting Oral Histories for Entrepreneurship Study” won the Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice Best Conceptual Paper Award, at the US Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) 2004 meeting. He received the Best Reviewer Award at the 2006 USASBE meeting.
