For over two decades, Brian McTear has been a nationally respected record producer, musician, and the owner of Philadelphia’s revered Miner Street Recordings. He’s had an uncanny knack for attracting and working with many remarkable artists in their formative years. McTear played a role in seminal recordings by bands like Dr. Dog, Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs, Sharon Van Etten, Meg Baird and Marissa Nadler, and in 2010, as part of an early Shaking Through episode, he produced the song “Meet the Frownies” with the band Mr. Twin Sister. That track provided the main sample hooks for Kendrick Lamar’s breakout single, “The Recipe”. In 2011, McTear also mixed Joan Osborne’s Grammy nominated blues album, Bring it on Home. McTear is a natural teacher, mentoring not just musicians, but also up-and-coming young engineers like Matt Poirier (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), Matthew Schimelfenig (Lotus, Cayetana) and Jonathan Low (who won a Grammy in 2018 for his work with The National) - all of the above worked as head engineers under McTear at Miner Street. In his personal life, McTear grew up, one of seven kids. He and his youngest sister have cystic fibrosis (CF). A rare but deadly disease, he has defied the odds by living a healthy life (all things considered), certainly beyond the average life-expectancy. For Brian, nothing has had a greater impact on his life and life-choices. McTear himself even holds that living with CF is what gives him his unique ability to empathize with the artists he works with in the studio and throughout this series.
