I worked as an independent software developer, primarily in Ruby and Python. Most of my time was spent working with a health care startup building their initial platform with Ruby on Rails and MongoDB.

I was able to go from not knowing any Perl to be being a contributing team member in the time from my first interview to my starting date, about one month. I spent most of my time working on Adopt-a-Pet, fixing bugs, creating specs, and developing new features.I also did devops work and worked to move hosting of Adopt-a-Pet to AWS. I did early stage work on automating as much of the management of our infrastructure with CloudFormation and Chef.Example projects have included:* Building a system to allow animal shelters to use pre-defined templates for pet descriptions. The system made heavy use of AJAX and jQuery to allow the user to easily manage and use their templates while adding pets.* Building a system to allow shelters to post volunteer opportunities and giving users the ability to find these opportunities with geolocation searches. The search was implemented using PostgreSQL's earthdistance module.I spent time advocating for agile and domain driven design methodologies in an effort to tackle a large amount of technical debt. This involved difficult discussions drilling down into architectural problems, the pain they cause, and a path forward to a better solution.

I used to contribute to Trac, primarily through plugins. I took over maintenance of the Batch Modify plugin, which was completely broken at the time. Fixed bugs, added features, rewrote the UI, and got community contributions.Also created a Trac Whiteboard plugin, which displayed custom query results in a kanban-style view. Users could drag-and-drop tickets across columns and save their changes. This portion was implemented with jQuery UI.
