Dr. Brian Nahed is a Neurosurgeon specializing in brain tumors (glioblastoma, low grade / high grade gliomas, meningiomas, metastatic brain tumors) at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Nahed's is an expert using advanced techniques in brain mapping, awake surgery, language and motor mapping, subcortical stimulation, intraoperative technology and imaging to achieve the best outcomes and maximize the ability to safely and aggressively remove brain tumors. He lectures internationally on the use of intraoperative ultrasound. Born in New York, Dr. Brian Nahed attended UCLA where he majored in Neuroscience, awarded Phi Beta Kappa, Bruin of the Year and departmental Highest Honors. He attended the Yale School of Medicine where he graduated with honors and awarded the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship. Dr. Nahed completed his neurosurgery residency at MGH and a postdoctoral oncology fellowship with Drs. Haber and Maheswaran in the MGH Cancer Center.Dr. Nahed was recruited to the MGH Department of Neurosurgery, MGH Brain Tumor Center, and Harvard Medical School in 2011. He has established a very busy clinical practice focused on gliomas, meningiomas, and metastatic cancers. His research focuses on developing the first blood test to diagnose and monitor brain tumors. He published the first evidence of circulating tumor cells in the blood of patients with glioblastoma. Together with Dr. Stott, Dr Nahed runs an NIH funded laboratory developing liquid biopsy test for brain tumors patients.Dr. Nahed serves as the Director of the MGH Neurosurgery Residency where he has developed innovative neurosurgical training and education focused on advancing neurosurgical techniques to improve training, OR efficiency and outcomes.He serves as Vice President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and Treasurer of the CNS/AANS Executive Committee on Brain Tumors. He co-chairs the CNS Leadership Institute focused on leadership training developing leaders in healthcare. He is a member of the Senior Neurological Society, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Council of State Neurological Societies., and American College of Surgeons and Washington Committee. He serves as a lead neurotrauma consultant for the National Football League (NFL). Dr. Nahed is a leader in tele-medicine, healthcare delivery, and digital biomarkers for health. His focus is to improve healthcare by developing novel biomarkers for brain health. He is a pioneer and has developed innovative brain health digital biomarkers to help brain health.
