About Brian Hale
Brian Hale is a veteran leader and early founder of the growth discipline. He began his internet career in 1999 working at ACDSee in Canada where he was asked to “figure out that search engine thing”. Since then he led demand generation, ecommerce, search and growth departments for start ups like DivX and uptake which was acquired by Groupon. He joined Facebook in 2010 where he was most recently Vice President of the Product Growth team. His team spread the discipline of “Product Lead Growth” across the company and family of apps from Advertiser Growth, to Instagram, Messenger, Whatsapp, Occulus and more. Today he is the Chief Growth Officer at Doordash. Brian Hale’s superpower is using data and product experimentation to drive growth of app adoption and engagement.

Vice President - Product Growth
I lead the Product Growth team from 2013-2020. At FB, Product Growth is integrated with most growth product teams across the FB Family of apps. A growth product team is a product/engineering team whose product is a goal/metric. These teams focus on making product changes that will drive the most growth for the product as possible. The Product Growth team works on growth across many areas to grow the FB family of apps, i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Whatsapp, Growing the number of Businesses & Advertisers (Advertiser & Pages Growth), Deepening engagement i.e. Sharing growth, Live Video, and many other areas i.e. Charitable Giving, Facebook @ Work, Occulus etc.Product Growth team members are technical product growth experts who have a background in, product optimization, analytics, and/or performance mktg (i.e. SEO, SEM, email marketing, landing page optimization etc.). they drive impact by working with product & engineering teams to optimize their products and make product changes that drive up acquisition and retention and reduce churn.
Director - Product Growth
I lead the Product Growth Team at Facebook which partners with product and engineering on key growth challenges across the company.1) Core User Growth - our goal is to connect the next billion users and help them to find their friends on Facebook, Instagram & Messenger. This includes focus areas such as the new user experience, helping new/low-engagement users connect, optimizing flows, SMS, Email, SEO, Internet Advertising, etc. and generally identifying and removing friction that blocks growth. 2) Advertiser Growth. This includes two main areas: Getting the businesses already on Facebook to advertise, and growing business pages (getting all the businesses in the world onto Facebook).3) Brand perception growth - using digital marketing tools and collaborating with our brand marketing team to influence our brand
Manager - Growth Marketing & Analytics
I joined the awesome Facebook growth team initially focused on Search marketing - SEO & SEM, However, as usually happens I started to accumulate more and more responsibilities, For example I began working on the relatively nacent business Pages project as well as helping new users find their friends on Facebook. I am also particularly proud of my amazing team.
Director - Growth And Seo
Basically my role was generally "Get More Traffic" and "Get More Revenue" :)
Senior Manager - Demand Generation And Seo
During my time as Senior Manager of SEO and Social Media the goal was essentially to take a brand new site that previously did not exist and to grow it into a real player in the most competitive online vertical - Travel. This was a major undertaking because starting from scratch in an already crowded space, especially when your major source of traffic is going to be from organic SEO (rather than paid advertising) is a major challenge. Given the magnitude of the challenge the results are dramatic. Traffic to the site, which was launched in 2008 reached one million unique visitors for the first time about 12 months from the time that the very first pages were live to the world. Proving that it is possible to be successful using online marketing techniques, even in a crowded space if you employ the proper strategy.
Manager, Ecommerce & Demand Generation
This position is difficult to describe, primarily because during my time at DivX I accumulated so many different hats. Initially My focus was on maximizing sales revenue and digital downloads of the DivX Player, DivX Pro Codec, (the now open-source) Dr. DivX.In order to do this major improvements to our ecommerce capabilities were required, and a transition to the ASKNET ecommerce platform (away from Digital River) both of whom I had worked with previously. ASKNET had much better capabilities internationally at the time, and the customer base of DivX is extremely diverse. After steadily growing our ecommerce revenues over the first year of my tenure, our focus shifted to driving the maximum number of downloads of our free software because the primary lever for our business (on the software side) for both strategic and raw revenue reasons. in order to do this we explored cutting edge social strategies in the community as well as traditional shareware and partnerships with video related sites. We also developed cutting edge auto-update and installer technologies to encourage repeat downloads of DivX Technology. In 2006 we embarked on the launch of a risky new website called stage6.com. My role was to manage marketing strategy for the new site. After about 9 Months the site began breaking because the load on the system was to great for the infrastructure to handle, and after only a year the site grew into one of the Alexa top 100 websites in the world. Sadly the site became a victim of it's own success and shortly after I left DivX the stage6.com site (which was receiving in the 10's of millions of monthly unique visits/month) was closed down (despite venture firms having pledged funding for a spin-off...) the mystery of how this was rejected by the DivX board is one of the great mysteries of our time :)
Software Marketing Manager
When we formed the ecommerce team I assumed the role for managing marketing for our in-software sales channel. Essentially It was my job to ensure that as many users would download trial versions of the ACDSee software as possible, and then once they had downloaded, that they made a purchase. This was great fun because it was the single largest income stream for the company. As an aside - can you imagine that a 40MM+/year rev online software business did not have an ecommerce team for the first 5 years of it's life!... ahhh when the web was young...
Internet Marketing Analyst
At the height of the dot com bubble I began my career in technology in the beautiful community of Victoria BC. This position was a ton of fun, because at the time there were no "online marketing" professionals. The term "SEO" (short for search engine optimization) did not even yet exist. These were exciting times, when success meant topping the list in Altavista, Hotbot and Lycos. I simultaneously cut my teeth as the in-house analyst providing the "webalizer" tracking, personally managing an install of webtrends enterprise software on a tower that sat in a dusty corner of my cube, and attending board meetings to answer questions about the current trajectory of our traffic (a fun thing for a young guy as it was almost always up. ;)
