As a member of this team, I collaborate with Environment Artists and Developers to craft the environments where our characters live and play throughout our films. Our department encompasses a variety of disciplines, including surface modeling, sculpting, rigging, materials, matte painting, and procedural set dressing. While each member has their specialized skill set, our goal is to foster a team of generalists who can adapt to handle any task that may arise. To enhance our workflow, we continuously develop and refine our USD (universal scene description) pipeline to allow us to work in a more efficient and parallel scheme to manage multiple projects simultaneously. As part of this effort, I leverage our new pipeline tools to set dress and optimize environments for our upcoming feature, Nimona, as well as a few unannounced short projects.During my initial eleven years at Blue Sky, my role focused on Set Assembly/Dressing and Tactics optimization. Before the creation of the unified Environments Department, I held the title of Assembly Technical Director in a small team responsible for assembling and dressing environments and addressing all shot-based fixes through Final Render. Our team took great pride in managing sequence and shot continuity in an efficient and least-destructive manner possible, which necessitated cross-studio communication, data management, and trust development. In 2019, Disney acquired Fox, including Blue Sky Studios, which initiated a process of integrating our process and pipeline to align more closely with our sister companies of WDAS and Pixar. Although Blue Sky's primary focus is on creating feature-length content, the acquisition has provided opportunities for new content development, such as a revitalized shorts program, due to Disney's emphasis on streaming distribution.
