About Brian Rice
Over the past 25 years, I have learnt and employed epidemiological principles in a variety of settings. I lead, monitor progress in, and contribute to, surveillance and measurement research studies, most of which are based in eastern and southern Africa, the UK, and the rest of Europe. Having previously worked at Public Health England, the African Health Research Institute, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (where I was director of the Measurement & Surveillance of HIV epidemics (MeSH) consortium), in 2023 I took up my position at the University of Sheffield.I sit on a number of WHO and UNAIDS advisory / working groups, publish scientific papers in peer reviewed journals, and present regularly at national and international conferences, workshops and reference groups.

Associate Professor In Epidemiology
Within the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR), I take forward research focusing on the design and implementation of methods to maximize the potential of data routinely collected through surveillance and service delivery platforms in sub-Saharan Africa. I am the lead for the MPH key issues in global public health module, theme lead for global health, and departmental impact lead. I retain an honorary Associate Professor position at LSHTM.

As an Associate Professor at the school, I sat on a number of international panels / advisory groups focusing on maximising the potential of HIV data. I was the director of the Measurement and Surveillance of HIV epidemics (MeSH) consortium, co-director of the Sustainable Development Goals Health and Wellbeing (SDG-HaW) consortium, and co-director of the cross-faculty Centre for Evaluation.
