The Worldwide Lexicon is an open source collaborative translation platform that enables web users to view, create and edit translations to and from any human language, using a combination of machine, crowd and professional translations. This started out as a research project while I worked on telecom startups, and later turned into a company. While working on WWL, I was also the principal author of the TAUS reference API (TAUS is an industry trade group), which defined a common REST interface for translation companies to implement (at the time, every company had a different interface even though they all provide similar services).

As head of localization, I am responsible for making the Medium publishing platform accessible to users worldwide. This cross-functional role combines engineering, design (UI/UX) and product management, and involves both localizing the user interface, as well as developing features to support bilingual and multilingual users.

As head of localization, I am responsible for making the company's website, web app and mobile apps, initially English-only, accessible in multiple languages. The cross-functional role combines technical tasks (refactoring software to support localization) and non-technical tasks (project/vendor management). In addition to managing localization, I also lead our web API team, which is working to ship v2.2 of our REST API in July of this year.

Joined Gengo, a VC backed translation services company, as their director of API integration, where I recruited channel partners to integrate with their highly automated professional translation service (API). Integrations included Transifex, Drupal, and about a dozen other companies/platforms.

Open Communication Systems has developed a suite of mixed-media multimodal communication services that deliver live and time shifted audio programming to a wide range of computing and handheld computing devices. We developed an innovative conference calling and group communication service that was a local phone call in over 30 countries, as well as a service that enabled users to listen to live audio streams, such as radio stations, by phone.

Visto acquired Trekmail, the mobile email technology company I founded. Trekmail had developed an innovative suite of mobile email technologies, such as the ability to dictate voice messages to be sent as compact audio messages to any email account. This enabled people to compose and reply to email messages by voice, and made mobile email practical on standard cellphones and devices with no keyboard. On joining Visto I became the director of engineering for voice services where I reported to Haniff Somani, and oversaw the integration of the Trekmail technology into Visto's mobile email product line, including a native Symbian version that made sending a voice message as simple is clicking one key and dictating a voice reply.

Trekmail (www.trekmail.com) provides voice enabled email services to cellular carriers and wireless ISPs. The company's core services enable mobile users to easily compose and reply to email and SMS messages by voice using an innovative combination of IVR (interactive voice response), MP3 audio compression, and live help from human operators. The company's services, build upon open standards, are designed to inter-operate with the widest possible array of handheld devices, email and OS/software environments. The company is actively seeking licensees for its services.

Long time author for O'Reilly Media. I frequently write about software development and technology, and also wrote a book about SETI (Beyond Contact) in 2001.

One of the first e-commerce sites, PhoneZone was an online catalog and buyers guide for telecommunications equipment and services. We focused on the under-served small business market to provide customers with an easy way to shop for a wide array telephone systems, desktop telecom equipment and telecom services. PhoneZone was one of the first telecom companies to experiment with the Internet as a sales channel. The company was self-funded, with sales growing from $0 to several million dollars in three years. The company was acquired by catalog marketer Hello Direct in 1999.
