About Brian Stampfl

I love a challenge. The opportunities to solve problems and confront difficult tasks are what I am really looking for in my career. As such, the veterinary field is a perfect fit. My goal following graduation in 2017 is to enter food animal or mixed animal private practice, with a significant proportion of the work being in the dairy and/or beef industry. Maintaining herd health while ensuring profitability for farmers is something that I look forward to doing. While I enjoy learning all aspects of bovine practice, there are a few areas that are of particular interest to me. One is the management of youngstock on dairy farms, and the other is lameness in both dairy and beef herds. Areas in which I have less experience, but look forward to learning more about, include facilities design, farm staff training, biosecurity, and improving genetics. Overall, my goal is to be able to contribute to a practice right away following graduation. I have a strong work ethic, a passion for animal health, and a willingness to learn that I believe are integral to being a part of a successful veterinary team.

I am currently collecting data/samples for two studies in dairy cattle. One study compares maternal and replacement colostrum for dairy calves. Research duties are to process newborn calves and maintain records. This includes weighing, ear tagging, drawing blood samples, and tube-feeding colostrum treatments according to protocol. Upon completion of the project, I will present a poster at the Merial Summer Scholars Symposium in Ithaca, NY. The second study is an evaluation of a novel cow-side blood calcium monitor, along with an examination of how hypocalcemia around the time of calving affects hoof health in early lactation. Duties for this project include locomotion scoring cows, collecting blood samples, and keeping records.Aside from research duties, I am presented with daily opportunities to improve my clinical skills in dairy medicine. I vaccinate, perform physical exams, monitor and assess calf health, and assist in obstetric procedures. Additionally, working with a primarily Hispanic farm staff has motivated me to study Spanish.
