Our team designs, builds, and operates Uber's global production on-prem and multi-cloud network which enables every Uber Ride and Eats (and more!) from 2014 until the present day. ∙ Responsible for delivery and performance of all 5 of Uber's on-premise data centers, ATG Depots, 6 POPs and associated internet, peering, backbone and cloud network connectivity with an availability SLO of 99.9999 and an annual budget of over $43M.∙ Responsible for collaborating across Uber Engineering and Product teams to deliver a unified network roadmap anticipating future business needs for 2 lines of business: Uber Rides/Eats and Uber ATG (autonomous vehicles division).Experience Summary:∙ Interviewed, hired and promoted a team of 14 production network engineers. Established specialized sub-teams, such as a dedicated optical transport team. Voluntary attrition was 0% over this 3 year span.∙ Team flourished with 13 separate level promotions including 1 to team lead/manager position.∙ Led 2 separate teams (Uber and Uber ATG [autonomous vehicles]) reporting through 2 different chains of command while establishing a cohesive, unified roadmap and engineer evaluation process.∙ Budget authority grew from an initial $300k per one-off project to over $43M annually.∙ Successfully delivered the rapid, iterative design and build-out of Uber's first 5 international data centers and 6 POPs, all connected through multi-terabits of nationwide WAN capacity.∙ Responsible for organizational structure, project prioritization, and goals that, during my 3 years as manager and lead, led to: -- 98% price reduction in per-gigabit cost (intra-data center). -- Up to 70% reduction in per-gigabit cost (long-haul circuits). -- 9185% increase in bare metal server network; from x00 servers to over xx,000. -- 580% increase in trips from xxk to xxxk peak concurrent trips per-second. -- Availability SLO of 99.99, and in the final 6 months period, surpassed with 100% at 99p.

As Uber's founding network engineer, laid the principles of Uber’s network architecture and led the build out of the first 2 Uber production data center networks, established global ASN and peering connectivity and connected a rudimentary nationwide and international WAN.∙ Greenfield design and build-out of Uber's first collocated data center, which accepted Uber's global production traffic within my first 6 months.∙ Second data center was online and taking production traffic 3 months later.∙ Solo design and build out of the new worldwide headquarters at 1455 Market for an initial 400 employees, completed within my first 45 days.

First dedicated network engineer in Yelp's 7 year (at the time) infrastructure history. Responsible for Yelp's 3 production data centers and 7 corporate office networks.∙ Designed and implemented a global WAN utilizing a 3rd-party service provider's MPLS (L3 VPN) service. This project included installing and configuring Quagga, deploying Juniper SRX220 and SRX550 and building BGP policies for internal and external peering.∙ Designed and built greenfield network for 3rd data center utilizing a Clos design, OSPF, MC-LAG and Force10 switches.∙ Migrated to hybrid network with on-prem data centers connected with AWS via multiple Direct Connects with IPSec VPNs as backups.∙ Led evaluation and deployment of Duo 2-factor authentication for 1,500 SSL VPN users.∙ Designed and deployed 802.1X authentication for wireless and wired corporate connections using a 4-node Cisco ACS cluster. The same ACS servers served double-duty using RADIUS for end-station acceptance and TACACS+ for fine-grained network equipment administration.

Sole network engineer for a next generation teen-oriented social networking entertainment site.∙ Responsible for ensuring proper uptime for Doppelganger’s corporate and production networks.∙ Projects included: moving the vSide production network into a multi-homed architecture with BGP routing; implementing various SNMP and NetFlow-based freeware tools to accurately monitor trend utilization and provide diagnostic and forensic tools; ongoing stability and security assessments.

Our team focused on the design of a global, converged network as we merged 4 separate legacy networks: Expedia, Hotels.com, Hotwire and Classic Custom Vacations.∙ Led the Expedia Inc. Network Architecture group with 3 direct employees from Expedia.com and Hotels.com.∙ Part of a global team that designed and implemented the Expedia MPLS network. The initial roll-out included 11 North American sites with international sites added on incrementally. Project saved over $50K in annual circuit costs while increasing QoS to a level appropriate for VoIP and video.∙ Project lead for the Hotwire corporate office IP re-addressing (DNS, servers, network) as well as on-boarding Shenzhen (China), Tokyo (Japan) and Chicago (USA) partners or branch offices to our MPLS network.
