About Brian Benton

I earned my PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of Minnesota in 2018. I have a strong interest in the development of new materials, as well as exploring new properties in materials through the exploitation of nanoscale phenomena and surface engineering. By applying the latest advances in nanoscale science and engineering to novel problems in electronics, quantum computing, energy, medicine, and beyond, we can overcome many current major technical challenges and innovate in entirely unique directions.Specifically, my background emphasizes electrical and material characterization, particularly in the areas of semiconductor thin films, nanocrystalline materials, and surface engineering. In addition, my undergraduate education in physics gives me a foundational knowledge from which to approach technical challenges, enabling creative and unique solutions. I have extensive experience working with vacuum and cryogenic systems for deposition, growth, and testing of materials and devices. I would be particularly excited to utilize and develop characterization for the advancement of material and device development, especially as they relate to energy generation/storage, optical, elctronic, and quantum science applications. Finally, it is personally important to include that I have a strong connection to Minnesota and the outdoor experiences found in this area. It is essential for me to know that my work is helping this state and this region continue to thrive economically, environmentally, technologically, and culturally. Giving back to this community is and will continue to be one of the main focuses of my career.

    Honeywell Feb 2022 - Present
    Charlotte, North Carolina, Us
    • Lead microfabrication process research and development and integration efforts of integrated photonics platform in support of Quantinuum trapped ion quantum computers. This process was a critical component for the development of their next-generation products. Areas of development included electron beam lithography, wet and dry etch, and thin films materials, as well as overall integration to minimize optical loss in photonic integrated circuits while creating and maintaining rigorous process control standards.• Owned complex process tools for nanoscale manufacturing, including responsibility for >$2MM electron beam lithography system that was a critical single-source tool for patterning sub-100nm features for multiple programs. This included developing process control procedures and standards to maintain product specs within customer requirements, as well as interfacing with product vendors for system maintenance and troubleshooting.• Awarded internal Honeywell seedling funding for a proposal to development novel grayscale electron beam lithography techniques, which expanded our photonics process tool kit in support of ongoing efforts to differentiate Honeywell offerings for new external programs.• Contributed to contract scoping/bidding for Quantinuum and external government projects• Managed a team of process technicians to execute plans for complex manufacturing plans to spec and meet contract deadlines.• Received Aerospace High Flyer award in Q1 2021 for pushing a Quantinuum photonics development milestone run with high internal/external visibility through fabrication under tight time constraints while integrating multiple new processes and maintaining process control to achieve then-record optical performance.
  • Skywater Technology Foundry
    Senior Staff Process Development Engineer
Skywater Technology Foundry Jul 2018 - Feb 2022
    Bloomington, Mn, Us
    • Technical lead for customer accounts responsible for as much as $6.8MM quarterly revenue. Responsible for interfacing with external scientists to understand the process impact on device physics and performance, with a focus on developing manufacturable processes for wafer-scale device fabrication in a 200mm CMOS Fab at a DoD Trusted Foundry. Customers include a mix of government agency contracts (DARPA/MIT 3DSoC) and private sector technology companies across a range of fields, including integrated carbon nanotube/RRAM integrated 3DSoC, superconducting quantum computers, medical/MEMS devices, and 2D materials.• Managed kick-off and implementation of multiple new medical sensing customers, responsible for demonstrating SkyWater’s technical and customer relations capabilities to a new business segment, as well as introducing new 2D material processing capabilities into the SkyWater fab.• Received Director’s Award in Q1 2020 for significant contributions to Josephson junction deposition and device development, enabling major gains and achievement of first ever performance milestones for large quantum computing customer.• Integration and development of deposition processes for advanced superconducting film stacks for quantum computing devices for multiple customers. Projects include reactive sputtering of ultra-thin superconducting films for single-photon detectors and Josephson Junctions requiring six-layer film stacks with precision interfacial uniformity and control.• Expanded SkyWater IP through planning and execution of statistical DOEs to develop 8 nm PVD Al, low-temperature PVD Nb, low-temperature and low-loss HDP-CVD oxide gapfill processing, and precision dry etch techniques for ultra-sensitive Josephson Junction processing.• Collaborated with a team of engineers, technicians, and equipment operators to meet product timeline requirements in a demanding 24/7 manufacturing environment.
  • University Of Minnesota
    Graduate Research Assistant
University Of Minnesota Sep 2012 - Jun 2018
Minneapolis And St. Paul, Minnesota, Us
    • Collaborated with a multidisciplinary research team organized and funded through the University of Minnesota Materials Research Science & Engineering Center (MRSEC) Interdisciplinary Research Group 2 (IRG-2). Led development and adaption of measurement and data analysis methods for characterizing the thermally activated charge transport processes in disordered quantum systems in accordance with theoretical physics models. Working with researchers in Prof. Uwe Kortshagen’s group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, these techniques were applied to thin films of various semiconductor nanocrystals (silicon, germanium, and ZnO) to inform synthesis processes for improved device performance.• Carried out non-thermal plasma synthesis and thin film deposition of silicon nanocrystals with various in-flight surface treatments for photoluminescent testing, as well as post-deposition infilling of these films using atomic layer deposition.• Led design and testing of new microelectronic device structures and development of associated measurement systems, techniques, and analysis methods for probing charge transport phenomena in nanostructured thin films.• Assisted in the design, construction, and SOP development of a graphene CVD system that sees ongoing use from users in the MNC.• Redesigned a previously built ALD reactor for our lab to improve speed and reproducibility of film growth.• Refurbished helium-cooled cryostat/electrical measurement system for renewed work and developed new LabVIEW software for controlling thermal/electrical measurements, data collection, and processing. Designed system adaptations to improve experiment outcomes through increased thermal contact to devices, reduced environmental thermal and vibrational interference, and enhanced electrical and optical measurement performance.• Maintained glovebox thermal evaporation system for Kortshagen group use, along with other vacuum systems.
