About Brian Mckee

During career I have held many positions from contributing designer to manager. This has given me a unique perspective of the creative process. Even on projects where I wasn't the lead, I found myself aiding in team continuity and alignment, either directly or indirectly pushing the team toward the goal. I have acted as a liaison between hardware and firmware, hardware and software, and hardware and sales & marketing.I have an intuitive understanding of the nature of products and the projects that build them. I see the big picture and can visualize the path that will take the team to the goal of realizing the product.I have worked on teams that have created products that have earned companies hundreds of millions of dollars, have followed many projects from start to finish and have created not only products, but also the processes to manufacture, test and calibrate the products.

  • Smartengine | Wtec
    Senior Principal Hardware Engineer
    Smartengine | Wtec Feb 2016 - Mar 2023
Designed Cyclone V based replacement CPU board for existing smart lighting product. Created u-boot driver for PCIe interface of Cyclone V (using linux driver as basis), debugged and enabled NVMe boot. Developed configuration and patch set and build script for generating QSPI flash image from u-boot-socfpga images.Supported existing production.Worked with external supplier to develop replacement power supplies. Walked hardware through various safety and regulation agency certifications.Supported customer service in the characterization of field failures and root causing failures of RMAed devices.Hacked linux and the FPGA design files until NVMe worked and was stable in linux.Developed u-boot drivers and hardware profile for embedded Cyclone V board.Developed new Light Engine hardware architecture utilizing Cyclone V and the Texas Instruments TPS92518HV dual channel LED controller.Created System Verilog bench to test all hardware features simultaneously by assigning tests a single or group of channels automatically. Simulation ran for 120 ms and tested a dozen features spread across more than a dozen output channels.Developed method to power small DC loads at the light fixture while being able to turn of the fixture load and communicate with the micro-controller based sensor pack.Developed a configuration for Ubuntu Server to act as a production master controller utilizing PXE boot for the cyclone V SOC based embedded systems.Developed Production flow scripts in python 3.7 or newer. Code reads CSV register descriptions and generates python object source code for reading and writing (to the bit level) of each control registers within the FPGA.Developed and supported a cloud based repository of production flow logs using rsync as the backup process and a method to push out production test updates. The new system would have been based on a VPN to simplify the transfer of data back and forth.
