About Brian Uphoff

I care as much about how we do our work as I care about what we do. I’m a UX PM Lead with a strong background in CS & Math who has worked extensively on large software projects for over 10yrs. Building consensus and fostering an environment of teamwork across disciplines with a bias toward action is a central focus of how my teams operate. A large motivator for me personally is solving difficult problems by breaking down ambiguous challenges into tangible steps toward impactful outcomes.

Our team drives coherence across Windows UX using customer-focused Jobs-To-Be-Done.• In early Win10 we brought back the Start Menu. The UX my team, our designers, and engineers delivered was a Start experience that tailors to a variety of devices (Laptops, Desktops, Tablets, Phones) and it brought our Win7 and Win8 customers forward to the new Win10 OS. • For Win10X, my team, along with our design and engineering counterparts, created a simplified Start experience for the Surface Neo (coming for Holiday 2020). • My team delivered Windows Timeline, a history based UX for getting back to recent “activities” across your devices including your phone and PC. • We have also delivered improvements to pen & inking experiences including updates to Snip & Sketch and lightweight UX that invokes when the pen is detached from new surface hardware. Beyond these features, my team has also been at the forefront of new ways of working within the larger Windows team. • We were the first to broadly flight experience to customers prior to major release dates. This work is now commonly known as “Windows as a Service” and delivered to customers via the “Windows Insider Program”. It enabled us to learn directly from customers, make tweaks to the experience based on feedback, and ship more frequently.• We transitioned to an Objective & Key Result framework for orienting investments toward business outcomes. • Our ongoing customer-focused approach regularly evaluates customer problems, objectives, jobs-to-be-done, and solutions as we conceive of new investments and deliver updates an ever-improving product. I continued work on Performance Fundamentals as I had in Win7 with new emphasis on the Immersive File Picker, Windows Explorer, and Search. As we transitioned to the Win8.1 release, I worked on the Actions and Answers team under Windows User Experience. I again worked on the Search Charm which was re-designed to merge previously separate views and introduce web search to the Start search experience and worked on experience improvements related to windowing between search and other apps, especially the browser. I also worked on a set of framework Components/Controls that apps and shell experiences leveraged including popup dialogs and flyouts. Windows Search Performance and Reliability continued to be a large investment at this time as well which I helped lead. During the Win8-8.1 timeframe I mentored several individual contributors with a focus on growing their skills to unlock their potential. Show less
