Profile bio

About Brian Voerding

I'm a lifelong Minnesotan dedicated to equitable community building and rural economic opportunity. I lead organizations and people dedicated to purpose-driven work that improves lives and transforms communities. I’ve lived, witnessed, and led individual and community change, much of it dedicated to fully realizing rural Minnesota’s power, promise and prosperity; advocating for and delivering accessible resources and equitable opportunities is my personal and professional wellspring. For the last few years I've overseen a growing CDFI-certified loan fund and portfolio of programs and services supporting and elevating diverse entrepreneurs across central Minnesota, including the Initiators Fellowship, one of the premier rural social entrepreneurship programs in the Midwest. My previous career was in nonprofits, where I founded a community engagement and development organization and facilitated regional and state capacity-building initiatives. My career before that was in journalism where I was the executive editor of a seven-day daily newspaper and part of the leadership for a regional media company in southeast MN and western WI.Prior to that, I had adventures in the worlds of traveling bands, jazz nonprofits, and community journalism. My drive is to serve and to be in service; my practice is hope and hard work. I believe in empowering leaders, changemakers and entrepreneurs; in guiding communities and organizations to collaboratively solve complex problems and creatively build resilient futures; and in the power of liberated futures.

I have the great joy and privilege of leading this incredible community-building organization that does so much good in so many ways for Central Minnesota that I am regularly surprised - and impressed! - every time I'm in community to discover new ways we've supported the people and places of this region for nearly 40 years. My work, ultimately, is as a champion, coach and guide for our strategies and work - all designed to be deeply in service to our region, building and supporting equitable economies and thriving communities. I cultivate relationships and partnerships, advocate for funding and resources, support and develop our staff, and position our programs, lending and grantmaking to serve as complementary forces alongside all our partners and collaborators.
