I am responsible for all database and systems operations for Astrology.com and Gardenweb.com properties of NBC Universal, which have recently become part of the NBC News Digital family. We also provide support to other businesses within the NBCU organization where we operate as an independent center of excellence, allowing for quick implementation of strategic projects using newer technologies and methodologies than those supported by the standard corporate stack.I manage a small team of devops engineers who support a local development team and multiple remote development teams around the world. We run our own colocation, and host the majority of our sites on-premise, with just a few hosts in the cloud on Amazon Web Services.We are primarily a CentOS shop, and our software stack is primarily open source. We manage a core network consisting of Cisco switches, PIX firewalls, and BigIP Load Balancers. For shared storage we use a mixture of fiber SAN and iSCSI. We have been able to consolidate our services significantly over the past few years with a combination of the HP C-series blade hardware platform and KVM virtualization.The majority of our high volume and highly iterative sites are built with ruby, but we also have the kitchen sink of java, php, python, and perl. And we use content management systems including Wordpress and Drupal and Comfortable Mexican Sofa. Served up by apache and varnish and lighttpd and tomcat. With Memcache, MySQL/MariaDB, Postgres, MS SQL Server, and even Firebird on the backend. And Akamai handling the DNS and CDN and application acceleration duties.For local monitoring we use icinga for availability and a combination of collectd/munin/cacti for performance trending. We also leverage several external services to measure the real-time user experiences of our sites including Chartbeat and New Relic.We rely on configuration management and automate everything possible to remain nimble as we scale via cfengine and puppet.

Implemented an in-house email marketing engine based on Annuncio Software, later acquired by PeopleSoft and then Oracle. This was powered by an Oracle-based email marketing database, for which I designed, built and manage. We migrated existing user data from the previous outsourced email vendor, designed custom subscription management interfaces, and built data bridges to the iVillage member database and multiple external partners. And developed a reporting database and suite of reports using basic Oracle building blocks, including raw SQL and PL/SQL via sqlplus and stored procedures, which we published via email and HTML. Later we integrated on-demand reporting via open source tools including BIRT.I own the full stack for the email marketing system, including databases and systems, which where a combination of solaris and linux and windows, and included between 20-30 physical machines to power our high volumes, upwards of 10s of millions a day. Performance was a continual challenge, and the first couple of years were an exciting time as we scaled the system.I manage the operations of the email marketing system, which requires much hard-earned domain-specific knowledge, including not only technical operations but also deliverability and reputation management. Which at these volumes is challenging at best, and requires not only implementation of all best practices including SPF/Sender ID and Domain Keys/DKIM, whitelisting and slow volume ramp up of sending IP addresses, complaint processing of feedback loops and bounce processing which can accurately categorize the endless variations of ISP bounce formats, but also good monitoring systems to ensure that any infrastructure breakdowns or dynamic blocks or ISP-side changes in policy are detected immediately.

Installed entire Oracle Applications software stack. Applied patches and supported implementation team.▪ State of Minnesota, Department of Transportation - Minneapolis, MN Aided client with creation of logical data model for custom application. Converted logical model to physical and built the database schema.▪ The Jackson Clinic - Jackson, TN Performance tuning of custom application.
