Sustainability Research - Alternative Energy - Organic PhotovoltaicsI work on developing solar cells which are based on proprietary state-of-the-art polymers and interfacial layers. The advantaged technology can be printed using low-cost roll-to-roll manufacturing processes. The organic solar cells do not contain hazardous components, such as lead or cadmium, unlike some other types of thin film technologies.OPV technology enables the development of flexible, lightweight and transparent solar modules that can be manufactured at a low cost. The Phillips 66 materials provide the potential for cost-effective renewable electricity generation on par with conventional energy technologies.

I designed a solution-blade roll-to-roll organic photovoltaic printer for in-situ synchrotron X-ray characterization. I also invented a process to print polymeric transparent conductors with record conductivity up to 4600 S/cm. A US patent application was filed and work was summarized in a peer-reviewed article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

My research involved the synthesis, fabrication and characterization of hybrid, and organic photovoltaics. Specifically, this work led to significant enhancement in morphological control and the lifetime stability of plastic solar cells. I also developed a technique for solution printing high performance and mechanically robust polymeric transparent conductors.

The University of Alberta nanoGroup is a student organization, cultivating and supporting the nanotechnology community in Alberta. While President, I oversaw a ten-fold increase in the operating budget and tripled group membership to over 500 members.

lightPower builds flexible plastic solar panels with long-term stability which can be integrated in consumer electronic products or used as stand-alone battery chargers. Flexible plastic solar panels are fabricated through roll-to-roll printing techniques, enabling high-throughput, low-cost manufacturing. I performed strategic business analysis, culminating in a comprehensive business plan pitched in multiple business plan competitions and to angel investors and venture capitalists.
