Research and development of antibacterial coatings for titanium substrates. During this period my activities comprised:• Research and application of metallographic preparation methods for Ti alloys;• Research into coating and surface modification methods, sample characterization methods, corrosion science and engineering, biocompatibility and antibacterial solutions;• Electrochemical anodization of Ti grade 5 and Ti grade 2 alloys and characterization of the produced oxide;• Decoration/functionalization of TiO2 nanotubes with inorganic antmicrobial agents through electrodeposition/electroless deposition processes;• Evaluation of the corrosion resistance of Ti alloys and the effect of the applied surface modification on the corrosion resistance through potentiodynamic polarization methods;• Antibacterial and biocompatibility performance of the produced surface treatments;

I had the chance to learn techniques in the culture of human cells (primary and secondary cultures), paraffin conservation and sectioning of patient tissue samples, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining, RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis and qRTPCR.

It began as a curricular internship where I was tasked with writing a Higiene and Infection Control Guide for the new operating theater of the hospital in coordination with the Hospital Administration, Sterelization Unit and Cleaning services, Maintenance and Equipment services. After that, my work was extended to the upgrade of the entire hospital Higiene and Infection Control Guide, according to the most recent recomendations of the Portuguese Directorate-General of Health. I continued during an extra-period after the end of my curricular internship.
