About Brice Coffer

Research Scientist with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) focused in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology from North Carolina State University. Currently most interested using large atmospheric datasets to tackle problems revolving around the forecast verification and prediction of severe convective storms, including understanding why some storms produce tornadoes and others that are similar do not. Skilled in numerical modeling of convective storms, with computer programming skills in Python, Matlab, and GrADS, as well as experience in developing and modifying FORTRAN code for atmospheric models.

The project that I am currently working on is designed to examine the possibility that supercell tornado forecasts could be improved by utilizing characteristics of the environmental wind profile in the lowest few hundred meters of the atmosphere. This hypothesis emerged from my dissertation work, which linked the near-ground wind profile to the organization of severe thunderstorms and their probability of tornadogenesis. This project further addresses the ramifications of the near-ground wind profile to the forecast skill of the significant tornado parameter (STP), which is the most commonly used environmental indicator for tornadic thunderstorms.

My thesis and dissertation work focused on the final stage of tornadogenesis and what separates seemingly similar nontornadic and tornadic thunderstorms. This research used unique observations near severe thunderstorms to formulate testable hypotheses to investigate in a modeling framework. Using high-resolution cloud models, tornadic and nontornadic storms were simulated to look at characteristics that differ between the two storm types and whether those characteristics can be linked to the environment. The goal of this research is to identify environmental traits that can be used by operational forecasters to improve the forecast and warnings of tornadoes.

As an undergraduate researcher at the National Severe Storms Laboratory, I was involved in a number of projects related to forecast verification, lightning, and preparation for field projects. My capstone thesis with the University of Oklahoma and the National Severe Storms Laboratory involved using an experimental convection-allowing WRF model to test whether the prediction of boundaries that often initiated severe convection in Oklahoma had location biases within the high-resolution forecasts. My other day-to-day job responsibilities included maintaining the Oklahoma Lightning Mapping Array, including collecting, processing, and distributing the data to partners around the country. I also often assisted in the design, assembly, and installation of instruments for various field project conducted by the National Severe Storms Laboratory.
