I worked as a member of the Technology-Assisted Lifelong Learning group within the Department for Continuing Education. My responsibilities included the development and implementation of online courses, and research into online learning.The role encompassed project management, monitoring the design and preparation of course materials, incorporation of leading edge technologies such as our customised XML Authoring Process (XAP), ongoing usability metrics, and creating innovative solutions to the pedagogical challenges of online tutoring and studying. My research centred on non-classroom learning methods applied online, and evaluation techniques. I managed various projects and the team members working on them directly.1. Diploma in Computing via the Internet:an online undergraduate diploma from the University of Oxford established in 1999. (I also tutored on this and the online course.)2. Enabling Mothers to Understand Medicine (E-Mum):a two-year BT-funded research project aimed at teenage mothers combining online education with state of the art foetal monitoring.3. Siberian Online Learning Initiative (Tempus Tacis programme):a series of projects in conjunction with European and Russian universities to develop best practices for online learning in Siberia and Kazakhstan.4. My responsibilities centred on three main areas: consultancy, project management (including implementation), and training development.My clients included FTSE 100 companies, major banks and government organisations: for example,advising a supermarket chain on best practices in setting up their intranet; a car software database company on appropriate strategies for moving to HTML-based Help; and a project for a European train operator who required prototype intranet content and implementation within three weeks.Other projects included acting as consultant to a UK government department as they set up their intranet; including prototype and initial content development. I also designed, engineered and delivered complete intranet and internet training solutions, with client customisation, for the same government department, a well-known infrastructure developer and two high-street banks.
