Relief English Teacher

Penryn College

I spent three months standing in for an English teacher who was on maternity leave. I taught two Grade 8 (and prepped for the other Grade 8 teachers) and two Grade 10 English classes. I was a Grade 10 grade tutor and had a pastoral mentor group of pupils of all ages from Kite house. In the afternoons I gave extra lessons to Grade 8s and taught beginners ballroom dancing. I stayed in White River and really enjoyed being out of the city again.

Deputy Head

Summit College

Johannesburg Area, South Africa

Employed by Caroline MillerSummit College is a small school which has been through a number of changes in the past few years and I joined the school with the task of formalizing the processes around the academic performance and day to day administration of the school. This involved policy making and tightening up on all administrative procedures. There was no head of the High School and, along with the Deputy Head – Discipline and Boarding, I reported to the Executive Head, Caroline Miller, former head of the prep school and long time staff member. In addition to the Academics I was responsible for staff appraisal in the High School as well as pastoral care. I implemented a vertical aged groups Mentor system, introduced an SRC and changed the student leadership structures and the way in which prefects are chosen as well as introducing a Matric Committee system to give all Matrics a chance to play a leadership role. I also brought in a Mentoring programme for new staff members and began the process of producing Job Profiles and Performance Contracts for all members of staff as is the current business model.I taught Life Orientation to the whole school which I enjoyed as it was a great way to stay in touch with every pupil. As the LO teacher, I brought Human Progress Management in to do subject choice testing for Grade 9s and Career testing for Grade 11s. The Grade 9s and 11s now go on job shadowing and work experience respectively. In the afternoons coached Tennis and Netball.

I organized two Junior Round Square Conferences, one Regional Conference and a pre-conference tour for foreign students attending the South African conference.
