I am an anthropologist and science writer who specializes in biocultural medical anthropology, with a focus on maternal-infant health and the bio-behavioral adaptations associated with lactation in human and non-human primates. Currently a Research Assistant and Knowledge Translator in THRiVE Discovery Lab, an interdisciplinary Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) lab at the University of Manitoba and a graduate student at the University of Colorado Denver.I study lactation as an adaptive strategy and biocultural system. I have also studied critical medical anthropology, childbirth and Western biomedical systems, infant development, life history and reproductive ecology. I am very passionate about science writing and promoting scientific literacy. In 2017 I was a founding team member for March for Science, where I worked in communications as well as organizing their inaugural Science, Institutions, Governments, and Society Summit. I have also done consulting research for various NPOs focused on <5 nutrition and maternal health amongst the world's most vulnerable populations. These projects have included investigating the sociocultural forces that influence cesarean section rates in the U.S., WHO/IYCFE-compliant infant feeding support in refugee camps, and the sociopolitical variables that affect access to obstetric care in the Sidama region of Ethiopia. In my spare time, I enjoy knitting, hiking, learning Irish, and playing classical violin/Irish fiddle. I took up violin as my COVID hobby and believe that in order to become kinda good at something you have to be okay with being really bad at it for a while.
