Since graduating with my MLIS, I’ve been gaining incredible hands-on experience as a Library Assistant at CADL Haslett’s branch. From providing reader’s advisory and reference services to patrons of all ages to planning and facilitating engaging programs for kids, tweens, and teens, I’ve been diving into all aspects of public service. I have been working on curating booklists and displays to highlight our diverse collections, and actively contributing to collection management by tackling thorny weeding areas. Recently, I had the pleasure of spearheading Spring Break programming at our branch. I planned a week full of themed programs, collaborating with an Assistant at our sister branch to minimize overlap. My favorite part of the job is coming up with programs that bring the community together. Last year, I reformed the T(w)ee Advisory Board, and we’ve worked on some great projects. In the fall, we collaborated with the Haslett Beautification Association to winterize the flower beds in front of the library. In the winter, we made no-sew blankets to donate to a nearby cat cafe. I’m looking forward to reaching out to more areas of our community for summer programs!

At the UW Libraries, I got to dive into the world of technical services. I was responsible for receiving serial publications for 10 library branches. Independently processing 100s of serials every week, I meticulously created and corrected item records and library holdings using the Alma/Primo ILS and communicating across departments to address irregular or missing issues. One of my proudest accomplishments was clearing the 3-year backlog of serials that had piled up from the COVID lockdown, freeing up space and staff time. After completing that, I got to move on to working with more complex materials like Special Collections and International Studies.

Paint the Town is a small but mighty (read: incredibly busy) pottery painting studio where I got the full retail experience: providing excellent customer service, processing an enormous number of daily transactions, and managing inventory (receiving, stocking, and updating our database). One of my favorite parts of the job was serving as the liaison for birthday parties and large group reservations, making sure every customer had a positive experience. I also loved joining the tight-knit team responsible for the continuous operation of our 3 kilns. This taught me how to work collaboratively while maintaining a tight schedule with precision and efficiency.

Working at AADL was my first foray into the public library. I worked in circulation through the slow reopening process after the COVID shutdown. As a result, we had to swiftly adapt our processes to ever changing/evolving safety guidelines, always prioritizing the health and safety of our patrons. I worked on shelving, processing returns and holds, inter-library loan items, and of course, welcoming patrons back into the library.

I was so lucky to be able to work with Professor Martha Olcott during my undergrad at MSU. I was a team member on the digital humanities project "Collapse and Rebirth: A Living Archive on the End of the USSR and Afterward." A large part of my role was digitizing over 300 historical materials in English, Russian, and other languages of the Soviet sphere, ensuring accessibility and discoverability through recording Dublin Core metadata and adhering to archival standards. Having had no previous DH experience, I had the opportunity to attend HILT (Humanities Intensive Learning and Teaching) with the team in the summer of 2019 to get an intro to the field and its standard practices. In the years following, my team and I presented our work on the project at a couple of conferences across the country including CESS in 2019 and DH2020. This experience is what really helped me decide to go into Library and Information Science.

At ITEC Lansing, I got firsthand experience in teaching, program development and assessment, and community engagement. I had the privilege of teaching afterschool and summer classes for grades K-12 in a wide variety of spaces, from neighborhood community centers and public schools to religious centers and public housing developments. I led classes in digital media production, coding with Scratch, 3D printing and more, fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment for all students. I even got to pilot Google’s Applied Digital Skills courses, collaborating with their representatives to assess and improve the kids' learning experience. Beyond the classroom, my role extended to outreach and events coordination. I loved being able to get out into the community and meeting with families at resource fairs and potential donors at fundraising events, showcasing our programs and building community partnerships.

At the MSU Museum, I worked closely with the Head of Marketing and Communications to coordinate and draft social media posts across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, ensuring all materials met our institutional branding standards. I edited press releases, blog posts, and other promotional materials. I even got to learn about the basics of website management with WordPress.My favorite part of the job was creating videos for the Museum’s YouTube channel. I planned, shot, and edited 12 videos on everything from exhibit openings, special events, fundraising efforts, and more. I loved the creative freedom and collaboration across departments these projects allowed!
