When I was about 15 I wanted to get a head start on saving for my service mission and college. I was underage so I couldn’t get legally hired to work a normal job, so I took matters into my own hands and started my own business as a power washer. This was the scrappiest startup around, clearly bootstrapped by a kid. I passed flyers door-to-door, built up a clientele, then borrowed my parent’s power washer and power-washed everyone’s garbage cans for $15 a can. Clients loved it because their trash cans stunk but they didn’t want to do the dirty work. Because I was the only one willing to get my hands dirty, I was able to make money from a job in a space where no one else would. Over the course of 2 summers I was able to rack up some serious cash, and more importantly, I learned the basics of entrepreneurship.
