It is from this domain that difficult conundrums may surface and disruptive and creative ideas emerge. Taking the time to explore this territory, making the hidden known and being available to new learning and ideas delivers long term benefits to individuals and organisations.The past 20 years of my career has been dedicated to growing both the theoretical foundations for this work and its application to organisations: first through my doctoral research into systems psychodynamics and consulting practice, then subsequently through teaching, consulting and continuing my research in this highly specialised field. I have learned that to do this work, you have to care deeply about making sense and be courageous enough to subject habitual assumptions and practices to scrutiny. This is necessary if you want to make lasting and meaningful changes to organisations and how the people in them live and work together. Whether I am in a consulting, teaching or supervising role, I regard this practice as a collaborative endeavour. To this shared enterprise, I bring 30 years experience consulting to organisations and an academic career researching, lecturing and supervising at Masters and Doctoral level in Systems Psychodynamics and Group Relations. Recent work has included an exploration of Freud's notion of the 'Narcissism of Minor Differences' (NMD). Organisations are concerned to create workplaces that are inclusive, diverse and psychologically safe. The focus is often on observable or stated 'otherness' designated by race, colour, gender and identity. While this is important, some of the most toxic dynamics in groups and organisations can also be perpetuated between people who seem most alike.
