    My career as an organic synthetic chemist has centered on the syntheses of novel compounds that enable biologists to investigate the metabolic pathways of biological systems in greater detail. I have been the key chemist who has designed and synthesized nonfluorescent dyes and derivatives (fluorogenic dendrons and targeted probes for cellular physiology) that bind to fluorogen activating proteins (FAPs), compact antibody-derived molecular recognition reagents that reversibly bind and activate fluorescence in otherwise nonfluorescent dyes. Recent projects I have designed and implemented synthetic routes to fluorescence-based potassium-sensors that can be targeted.I have designed novel routes to pH-sensing cyanine dyes and build tandem dye constructs for the use of FAP-based recognition assays. I have build biotin-based capturing reagents and synthesized fluorogenic initiators for polymers.
