I have provided documentation-related services to a wide range of companies in many different fields of industry. In the course of my 30+ years as a documentation developer I have always analyzed not simply the immediate information needs but identified the underlying requirements in terms of product, process, and workflow. I consider the available options and develop a complete workflow to produce the required package of documentation products. I have also developed and presented workshops and training courses for technical writers and documentation managers, and for software developers needing to document their own work. I harness existing resources, skills and systems within the organization, enhancing them where needed so that every role does what they're best at and so that documentation development goes hand in hand with software development, in a truly Agile and DevOps manner. This is the Integrated Documentation Development (IDD) approach. IDD has proven invaluable in many different scenarios. For example, a large hospital found that the IT department had lost track of the documentation for their various systems. I facilitated an analysis of the current state of the documentation, then developed an approach for consolidating what was available and providing what was missing. Under my guidance, the system managers themselves created those elements of the documentation that were needed but not yet present. A similar project is one that I carried out with a large manufacturer of artificial fibres, where an enterprise resource planning package (SAP) had been implemented and financial staff needed to accept the new context, and work under changed conditions. I set up a program in which one day per week they would meet and under my guidance write their own working instructions, supported by templates and guidelines that I developed for them.During my 11+ years at what is now GeoSoftware, I set up the complete user documentation process, called the Unified Help System, through which up-to-date Help and Release Notes for multiple software products are included in every nightly build with an absolute minimum of technical writing resources. The UHS consists of a commercial content management system, carefully configured and enhanced with scripting to pull in content from the code base and from external systems such as Jira.I have thorough knowledge of MadCap Flare and good working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Electron, jQuery, XSLT, VBA, regex, VB.net, and Python.
