I have always sought out to help people, but what has been most rewarding is the growth that comes along with it. I am excited to work alongside graduate students [postdoctoral students/fellows] as they matriculate through UAB. I also have the pleasure to work alongside graduate faculty/staff to support our students. My goal is to help bridge the gap between academic scholarship and careers in academia, industry and beyond. In the Career Center, I assist students to build their professional identity and empower them to demonstrate competencies that prepare them to successfully transition into the workplace. I am recognized and appointed by Assistant Vice President to serve as the Federal I-9 Compliance Officer for UAB Student Affairs. I conducted disability Intake interviews with enrolled UAB students and prospective families. Gathered information about student’s disability and how it affects them personally and academically. Together, we discussed requested accommodations, followed by appropriate referrals. After the intakes were properly accessed, accommodation conferences were conducted with registered students for approved disability services. All eligible students received information and guidelines of how they should communicate their approved accommodations with their professors/faculty members. Students were also informed of their confidentiality, self-advocacy and responsibilities of being registered for disability services. Out office held weekly staffing meetings to discuss students cases to determine the need for additional documentation or approval for services. As a graduate associate, I thoroughly reviewed assigned cases and interpreted documentation in reference to individual student’s diagnosis. I was able to communicate effectively both verbally and written to ensure the student had all necessary resources that would with assist the student in maximum achievement at UAB. Through this opportunity, I was able to establish a good rapport with diverse students, I encourage students to advocate for themselves as adults despite the transition from High School to College. I gained proficiency in collecting data as well as research data entry for Graduate level Research and Evaluation in our office programs.

I am the primary coordinator for several Nutrition Sciences Research studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Interfacing with research participants for screen qualification, recruitment, and consenting processes are just a few things that I do on a daily basis. Scheduling participant appointments and maintaining electronic files in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access are huge duties that require my undivided attention. I am compliant with IRB regulations and proficient in research data entry. I display strong communication skills and effectively communicate with team members. Though employed at the University, I collaborate with CCTS/Clinical Research Unit, Children’s Hospital of Alabama, Women and Infants Center and Center for Research and Women’s Health Clinic. I work closely with dietetic interns and students to train and offer exposure to career possibilities. I foster healthy relationships with participants in hopes to retain involvement in ongoing studies. I manage a number of Petty Cash accounts per UAB financial records.

I worked on a NIH funded research study called the SMART Study(Smart Minds in Activity & Recreational Teams). Our mission is to combat Childhood Obesity. The study is designed as an after school program to see what activities may help kids become "smarter," hence the name- SMART study. It is a blinded study that is tailored to 3rd-5th graders. This year we serve five different school and each day, we pick the children up and bring them back to our office for either Recreation activities(Arts & Crafts) or Exercise activities(Physical activity). The children are randomized after pre testing is complete at the beginning of the school year and cannot switch groups until post testing is complete at the end of the school year. My main duties were to recruit and train volunteers to be troop leaders. I had an opportunity to have a few of my own troops called outreach troops. Those outreach troops were developed to give every girl an opportunity to be a girl scout who may not have had the opportunity otherwise by being a traditional scout. I partnered with community organizations to make scouting known in the community. My duties were specific in four surrounding counties and I served them well.
