About Britney Pennington

I received my Ph.D. from UCSB in the Biomolecular Science and Engineering program and graduated summa cum laude from Florida Institute of Technology where I double majored in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. I also feel a social responsibility to share my research with the public and to conduct outreach to encourage young students to pursue STEM fields.

My teaching philosophy aims to engage students to critically assess data and to practice skills needed in a professional setting, and I have established a variety of interactive exercises that promotes student-centered learning. For example, I created a "Trivia Night" style activity. Students form groups and would be presented with a brief background of an experimental question. As a team, students must choose appropriate laboratory techniques that would address the given scenario. The team with the most relevant, appropriate techniques at the end wins pizza gift cards and cupcakes donated by local restaurants.
